ABOUT TAHA • Established in 2004 and became operational in 2005 • TAHA – an apex private sector association representing the Horticulture industry in Tanzania- a voicing platform for issues concerning horticulture in the country • TAHA was established with the aim of promoting and developing horticulture and addressing the general and specific needs of its members.
Strategic Objectives (Sos) TAHA has four main Sos: • Lobbying and Advocacy- govt and donors, • Technical Support– projects, trainings, seminars, shows, etc • Information dissemination– media, researchers, govt, consultants, etc • Promotion– in and outside Tanzania
KEY FACTORS 7 key factors for a strong and health value chain: 1. Growers mobilization and capacity building---groups formation, technology advancement, trainings, etc. – ENSURE COMPLIANCE TO GAPS AND other market standards/requirements
KEY FACTORS • AGRO-INPUT- availability, accessibility and proper utilization • Finance– good terms and conditions to allow pay back • Government support policies i.e taxes, infrastructure development, extension services, etc
KEY FACTORS… 5. INFASTRUCTURAL NETWORK • Storage and cooling facilities during transportation and storage • Irrigation system • Reliable power supply • Roads and airports • Communication network • Accredited labs for testing and analysis
KEY FACTORS….. 6. RELIABLE MARKETS– market structures, systems and institutions 7. R & D– innovation
TAHA INITIATIVES 1. LOBBYING AND ADVOCACY • Government waiver of the 18% VAT on airfreight • Streamlining Pesticides regulations and inspectorate system in the country • Reinstatement of deemed capital goods (a very strong link between the P&P)
TAHA INITIATIVES 2. AIRFREIGHT SOLUTION TO EXPORTERS– formation of TAHA Fresh Handling limited 3. Review of the National Horticultural Training Curriculum
CONCLUSION • The Public Private Partnership has to be encouraged – complicated and trust should be built • Private sector put up a solid case based on the hard core analysis- advocacy should be through solid case • Private sector must be very professional well organized and have one voice
