THEMIS Mission Confirmation Readiness • Review • Peter R. Harvey • University of California - Berkeley
Issue#1. Staffing • GSFC-Required Additional Management • UCB Has Complied with Additional Personnel • Swales/Hammers Oversight: Dave King (fmr GSFC/JSC Shuttle) • Mission I&T : Rick Sterling (RHESSI) • SE Oversight : • - Thermal : Paul Cleveland (GSFC, RHESSI) • - Software: Dave King / Will Marchant (EUVE, ChipSat) • - I&T : Terry Sharton (JPL retired, RHESSI) • ISM : Peter Berg (RHESSI) • IDPU Dev Lead: Michael Ludlam (Rosetta)
Issue#2. Instrument Schedules • Add Detail to Instrument Schedules • Continued to Detail Schedules (Definition & Resources) • Worst Instrument Schedule (ESA) • Added Instrument Manager (C. Scholz) • Had n tasks, Now has M tasks • At PDR, the instrumentation used 13 schedules, 1417 tasks • Currently, we use 20 schedules, 2121 tasks • Resource loading being added as time permits. Schedule Maintenance • Instrument Developers Report to Their Schedule Weekly • 1 Full-Time Scheduler for Instrumentation • Provides Status to Project Management & Mission Manager
Issue#3. Contracting • Impacts of Delayed GSFC-UCB Contract • GSFC-UCB Contract Definitized December 2003 • UCB-Swales subcontract work agreed by all parties • Implement subcontract value per CSR proposal • Add Swales-developed CPU card as mod 1 • Subcontract Expected in February timeframe • Contract Delay has had no known cost or schedule impacts to reserves.
Issue#4. Risk • Develop Integrated Risk Management • GSFC Provided Risk Management Training to UCB Jan 2004 • THEMIS Risk Management Plan Submitted Jan 2004 • UCB/Swales Risk Lists Integrated and Provided to Explorers
Issue#5. Separation System • Expedite Separation System Development • Prioritizing the Separation System tests at Swales • Long Lead Item (NSI’s) are currently critical path. • Review of Test Plan Considered Essential to the Effort
Issue#6. Orbit Debris • Expedite ODA Issue Resolution • Submitted Orbit Debris Analysis Results • Lower Perigee Option Helps but may Impact Science • Studies with KSC and Boeing to Provide Possibilities • Examining Possible Options to Increase Reliability from 0.83 • Reliability of a Single-String Probe will Never be 0.99
Issue#7. Instrument Thermal • Instrument Thermal Design • Instrument Thermal Design presented only at Peer Reviews • Detailed thermal analyses have been completed for all instruments • Currently on 3rd iteration of integrated instrument/spacecraft model • Hot/Cold cases have been identified and are being used • Board level thermal analyses are in progress • Peer Review of instrument thermal design has been scheduled for last week in February • Paul Cleveland (RHESSI) Providing Oversight of system level thermal design
Issue#8. Monitoring Separation • Add Separation Monitoring for Probes 2-5 • Top Probe Will Transmit Separation in RealTime • All Other Probes Will Be Programmed to Monitor Probe Sep • Each Probe will have Gyros On • Replay of All Probes after Separation one at a time. • Details in MPDR RFA #17
