SPEED • DEFINITION: Speed is the ability of the whole body or part of the body to move very quickly from point A to point B in the shortest possible time. TEST: • Test your speed : 50metre shuttle 5 widths of the badminton court as quickly as possible Or 100m sprint timed
SPEED Although whole body speed is very important sometimes only part of the body is required. • Football winger – whole body speed • 100m sprint – full body speed • Netball toss up – arm speed • Basketball jump ball – leg speed • Football shooting – leg speed • Badminton smash – arm speed to bring arm through quickly • Gymnast vaulting – whole body speed
SPEED TRAINING FOR SPEED: • Interval training • DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING SESSION: • 50m in 8 secs • 30 secs rest • 3 sets • 10 reps • OVERLOAD SESSION: • 50m in 7.5 secs • 30 secs rest • 3 sets • 10 reps
SPEED • WHY IS SPEED IMPORTANT IN INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES? • Badminton- You need speed to have fast reactions if your opponent plays a smash. So I can play controlled shots. • WHY IS SPEED IMPORTANT IN TEAM ACTIVITIES? • Football Winger- May need speed to get by a defender in a 1v1 situation. Help me keep possession of the ball.
