problem • Sometimes, people see an image, a pattern, or a style that they really like. • Currently, there is no easy way for people to find items with a specific style that they are looking for. StyleEyeUW CSE 441
solution • What if all you needed was a picture? • Use picture to send request • Wait for results • Respond to others’ requests • Follow styles of other users StyleEyeUW CSE 441

major changes to UI Change from iOS to Android Easier to implement interactive prototype More polished prototype for user testing StyleEyeUW CSE 441
major changes to UI Funcitonality added to delete followers/followees “3. [H2-7 Flexibility and efficiency of use] [3] No edit function in “my style” or for “following” and “followed”. Users may want to be able to, for instance, delete someone that they are following.” StyleEyeUW CSE 441
major changes to UI “Follow” functionality more obvious “4. [H2-7 Flexibility and efficiency of use] [3] Both “following” in the popular section and “following” in the my style section have the same names but different serve different functions. The “following” in the my style section essentially serves as a management screen for the “following” page in the popular section…” StyleEyeUW CSE 441
other problems addressed General: StyleEye now starts in the leftmost tab (“My Style”) instead of the rightmost tab (“Popular”) – more intuitive for Western users. Popular: To allow for easier user interpretation, the blue circles indicating matches found were removed, as their meaning was ambiguous. StyleEyeUW CSE 441
other problems addressed Camera: Retakes now allowed Users are alerted that they will lose their picture if they navigate away before submitting it StyleEyeUW CSE 441
other problems addressed My Style: Users now search to follow by username instead of legal name Submitting a search now clearly adds it to “My Style” Different colors distinguish your submissions from those of others. StyleEyeUW CSE 441
method for online study Participants: Our participants were friends from Facebook who saw our test link. Procedure: Allow users take their own time to complete the study on their own computers Test Measures: • Time • User rating ease of task • Heat maps StyleEyeUW CSE 441
tasks for online study • Submit a new style search for a bag that caught your eye on the street, adding your own description of what you like about the bag or want to see in your results. • You admire Jessica Simpson's style. Add her to the list of users you are following. • Look through popular styles and find something that Jessica Simpson has posted, and re-post it to your style. StyleEyeUW CSE 441
study results • For every task, 85% of the participants successfully completed the task. • Task 1, the “easiest” task, took our users the longest time to finish, on average 1:17. • Tasks 2 and 3 took our users an average of 0:28 and 0:46 seconds to complete . StyleEyeUW CSE 441
study results—tasks 1 and 3 First task: • Most participants responded that they found the interface very intuitive to use. • 2 users indicated their surprise at the cropping requirement, and a need for more instructions. Third task: • The majority of our users stated that they did not encounter any problems with the task, except for one remark on the clarity of the process. StyleEyeUW CSE 441
study results—task 2 Second task: • There was some confusion about how to follow someone. • Partially due to requiring actions that would not be the case in a working application on an Android device. • Having to press Enter to search • Prompt did not disappear when text box clicked • Ability to scroll down list not supported StyleEyeUW CSE 441
recommendations for design changes Make it more male-friendly! • Fashion is typically seen as more of a female-oriented interest. • One user commented very strongly that they would use StyleEye if it had more male apparel/accessories • Not hard to do—just make sure to include male apparel/accessories in future prototypes and advertising. StyleEyeUW CSE 441
recommendations for design changes Make following more intuitive • Implement scrolling and searching in “Following”/”Followers” lists • Make lists obviously something that the user can edit in the tab used to get there—include an icon, maybe? • Implement (un)block/(un)follow buttons on each user’s profile StyleEyeUW CSE 441
recommendations for design changes Make cropping obvious and intuitive • Add more instructions throughout the style submission process in general • Add instructions for first time users—cropping is not necessarily something a user expects to need to do • Implement dynamic sizing of crop square StyleEyeUW CSE 441
summary StyleEye’s design has changed a lot since its conception. Now it is not only an app to find clothing, but to find inspiration from other users. For the most part, it seems intuitive to first-time users. The design could be improved by… …making StyleEye more male-friendly …making following more intuitive …adding instructions to clarify the style submission process StyleEyeUW CSE 441
