Important dates If you join the Individual Speech Team, you will need to have the following dates open: • FEBRUARY 25, 2017 -- DISTRICT INDIVIDUAL EVENTS CONTEST • MARCH 11, 2017 -- STATE INDIVIDUAL EVENTS CONTEST (This is the 1st Saturday of Spring Break) • MARCH 27, 2017 -- ALL-STATE FESTIVAL INDIVIDUAL EVENTS, UNI, CEDAR FALLS
Acting • 8 MINUTES MAX; MEMORIZED; ACTING OF MONOLOGUE OR MULTI-CHARACTER SCENE DRAWN FROM A DRAMATIC, NARRATIVE OR OTHER SOURCE; ONLY 1 CHAIR IS ALLOWED; NO COSTUMES
Oral Interpretation of Prose (a story) • 6 MINUTES MAX • MANUSCRIPT DELIVERY OF EITHER ONE LENGTHY PIECE OF PROSE OR 2+ PROSE PIECES BUILT AROUND A THEME • PROSE IS CONNECTED BY INTRODUCTIONS AND TRANSITIONS TYING THE PIECES INTO THE THEME; IT IS PRESENTED WITH THE PURPOSE OF RECREATING AND BRINGING THE MATERIAL ALIVE IN THE MINDS OF THE AUDIENCE.
Oral Interpretation of Poetry • 6 MINUTES MAX • POETRY -- MANUSCRIPT DELIVERY OF EITHER ONE LENGTHY PIECE OF POETRY OR 2+ POEMS BUILT AROUND A THEME) • POETRY IS CONNECTED BY INTRODUCTIONS AND TRANSITIONS TYING THE PIECES INTO THE THEME; IT IS PRESENTED WITH THE PURPOSE OF RECREATING AND BRINGING THE MATERIAL ALIVE IN THE MINDS OF THE AUDIENCE.

EXPOSITORY ADDRESS (LIKE A DEMONSTRATION SPEECH) • 6 MINUTES MAX • STUDENT DELIVERS AN ORIGINAL INFORMATIVE/DEMONSTRATION SPEECH WITH AUDIO/VISUAL AIDS; NOTES OF 50 WORDS OR LESS ARE PERMITTED
AFTER DINNER SPEAKING • 5 MINUTES MAX • ORIGNIAL HUMOROUS SPEECH BUILT ON A THEME AND DELIVERED TO A SPECIFIC AUDIENCE • NO MORE THAN 50 WORDS OF NOTES • NO COSTUMES OR PROPS ARE ALLOWED
STORYTELLING • 5 MINUTES MAX • ANY STORY (CHILDREN’S LIT, SCIENCE FICTION, CLASSIC, FABLES, MYTHOLOGY, FAIRY TALES, GHOST, ECT.) MAY BE USED. • THE PURPOSE IS TO RETELL THE STORY IN THE STUDENT’S OWN WORDS IN AN ANIMATED FASHION • INTRODUCTION SHOULD INCLUDE TITLE AND AUTHOR. STUDENTS MUST REMAIN ON A STOOL DURING THE DELIVERY.
RADIO NEWS ANNOUNCING • 4-5 MINUTES • ½ HOUR BEFORE PERFORMING THE STUDENT IS GIVEN A PACKET OF NEWS STORIES, WEATHER, AND A COMMERCIAL. STUDENTS WILL TAKE THAT TIME TO CUT, ORGANIZE, AND PREPARE A RADIO NEWS BROADCAST BETWEEN 4-5 MINUTES IN LENGTH • THE STUDENT PERFORMS IN A ROOM OVER A MICROPHONE WHICH FEEDS INTO A SPEAKER FOR THE JUDGE IN A DIFFERENT ROOM.
IMPROVISATIONAL ACTING – LIKE WHOSE LINE • 5 MINUTES MAX • 3 MINUTES BEFORE PERFORMING THE STUDENT DRAWS 2 SEPARATE CHARACTERS, AND A SITUATION • THE STUDENT THEN PREPARES AN ACTING SCENE USING THOSE ELEMENTS;. THE SCENE MUST HAVE A BEGINNING, MIDDLE, AND END. • THE STUDENT MUST SHOW CHARACTERIZATION OF BOTH CHARACTERS (WHO MUST BE CENTRAL TO THE PLOT). THE SITUATION MUST ALSO BE CENTRAL TO THE PLOT. • WHEN PERFORMING THE STUDENT MAY USE ONE CHAIR
SOLO MUSICAL THEATRE • ONE SONG IS PERFORMED/ACTED • NO DIALOGUE IS ALLOWED!! • LIMITED TO NO LONGER THAN 5 MINUTES • ONLY 1 CHAIR IS ALLOWED AND NO COSTUMES OR MAKEUP MAY BE USED.
