I Polymer single crystal decorated Bucky paper, conducting lotus leaf and rose petalChristopher Li, Drexel University, DMR 0804838 Crystallization Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one-dimensional nanomaterials with fascinating properties. Vacuum filtration of CNT suspension leads to Bucky paper with superior mechanical and electrical properties (Figure I, II left). We recently demonstrated that free-standing nanohybrid Bucky paper with high CNT concentrations (13-70%) can be produced by using polymer single crystal (PSC) decorated CNTs to form Bucky paper (Fig. I, II right). By tuning the size of PSCs, surface roughness can be controlled and super hydrophobic, conducting films can be obtained (Lotus effect). More interestingly, due to the hierarchical nano structure (intra and inter CNT), these film showed high contact angle and strong adhesive force (nonsliding surface, mimicking rose petals, Fig. III, IV). Three BS/MS students have graduated and are currently pursuing their PhD degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. One BS/MS student and one undergraduate students have also been supported. • Outreach • We participated Philly Materials Day, which attracted ~ 1000 participants. • We hosted ASM Materials Camp during Summer 2011. • We hosted ~200 high school students from nearby schools as part of our summer outreach program at Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University . Graduate student Eric Laird is showing high school students how to make polyurethane foams as part of our outreach activities.
