First Draft • Summary: Topic sentences, transitions • The topic sentence should identify the part of the video • Example: The beginning of the video consisted of an opening sequence and a short introduction of the dish.
First Draft • Comments: Direct quotations • Every comment that you refer to should be directly quoted (Why?). If a comment is long, paraphrase the part that is not essential but use a direct quotation for the part that is important for your point. Make sure that the paragraph flows. • Always introduce and explain direct quotations (PIE). • Correctly format quotations (comma, colon; never a semi-colon).
First Draft • Comments: Direct quotations • Use commas if the verb of the sentence is a verb of saying, the verb appears before the quotation, the part of the sentence before the quotation is not a complete sentence, and the quotation itself is a complete sentence. • Only use a colon if the part of the sentence before the quotation is a complete sentence. • Refer to the links to direct quotations and indirect quotations on the course web page.
First Draft • Personal narrative • You should have selected a video that you can test. You will be reporting the results of your test in your personal narrative. • If your test is different in a significant way from the demonstration in the video then you need to clearly state what you did differently (substitution; skipped a step; guessed; followed suggestions from a commenter). • You might run multiple tests in order to expand your personal narrative.
First Draft • Evaluation • Consider the data from the comments from two angles (this might result in two paragraphs) • Angle 1: Suggestions for the videomaker to improve the video. • Angle 2: Identifying an appropriate audience or appropriate audiences for the video (as well as inappropriate audiences) and suggestions for how to use the video for appropriate audiences.
