Design Principles Objective: Analyze a design in terms of flexibility, balance, function, and proportion.
Warm-Up • List all the functions that modern cell phones can perform.
Hardware vs Software Design When you design modern technology, you often have to design both hardware and software Is a phone useful without software? Is a phone possible withouthardware? Do people care about thedesign of both?
Design Principle 1: Flexibility • A product should be readily able to accommodate change. • Future needs • Change in use or function
More Examples of Flexibility • Video game consoles that work on different tvs and games that are visible on different size screens • A web site that can accommodate various browsers, screen resolutions, operating systems • A planetary robot rover able to move across various surfaces, in various conditions (extreme heat and cold)
Analyzing the iPhone • What examples of flexible design do we see in the iPhone? • Flexible input system: screen can change configurations and use • Apps: accommodate change in needs rapidly
Design Principle 2: Balance • Parts of the design are equally distributed to create a sense of stability. • There can be physical as well as visual balance. • Types • Symmetrical or Formal Balance • Asymmetrical or Informal Balance • Vertical and Horizontal Balance
Balance Asymmetrical Symmetrical
Symmetrical Balance • The elements within the design are identical in relation to a centerline or axis. • The apps are arranged according to a grid
Design Principle 3: Proportion • The relationship in size of: • one component to another • The item to the user
Proportion • Buttons aren’t too big or small • What examples of proportion do you see?
Design Principle 4: Function • Each part has a purpose • Functional decomposition - split up a complex function into many sub-functions.
Functional Design Questions • What is the product’s goal? • Who will be using it? • Is it clear how to use it? • How does the user know its working?
Hardware vs Software Design Both can be appealing to the customer Both can look good Both can be easy to use Both can be comfortable / intuitive Both can have flexibility in their design
Design Analysis • Analyze a robot based on the four principles of design • Give examples of each of the design principles: • Flexibility • Function • Proportion • Balance
