  1. Design Principles • Graphic design principlesare ways in which elements are used together • Movement • Balance • Emphasis • Unity KaHS Web Design

  2. Graphic design principles • Graphic design principlesare ways in which elements are used together. • Movement • Balance • Emphasis/Dominance • Unity • Rhythm/Pattern • Proportion • Dominance • Similarity/Contrast

  3. What do you know about design Principles? • Movement can be shown with ___________________. • Lines, color, • List three types of line symmetry • Symmetry, Asymmetry, Radial symmetry • Two ways to show emphasis are __________ and ___________. • Contrast, geometry, color, isolation, placement • Unity can be described as… • To express with particular stress or force.

  4. Balance • Balanceis the act of comparing or estimating two things, one against the other, and the contrast between them. • Examples • Empty space (white space) and filled space • Text and images • Color and no colors and different colors • Textures against flat colors

  5. Balance in Page Composition • Three different types of balance when laying out pages • Symmetry • Asymmetry • Radial symmetry

  6. Symmetrical or Formal Balance • You can usually identify at least one of three lines of symmetry. • Horizontal • Vertical • Diagonal

  7. Symmetrical Balance

  8. Examples of symmetrical balance

  9. Examples of asymmetrical balance

  10. Examples of Radial Balance

  11. What symmetry are these? • http://mathforum.org/ • www.disney.com/ • Linear • http://evolution.berkeley.edu • Radial Symmetry • http://www.poissonrouge.com/ • Asymmetry

  12. Emphasis • Emphasis (Dominance):To express with particular stress or force • Contrast • Geometry • Color • Isolation • Placement • uask.com

  13. Emphasis • Emphasis: To express with particular stress or force. • What message is stressed here?

  14. Movement • Movementis the use of lines, color, and repetition to create the illusion of motion. • Curved forms or lines • Repetition of geometric forms • Fuzzy lines or outlines

  15. Lines • Lines can indicate motion or direction. • How are lines used in the composition on this slide?

  16. Unity • Unity: The correct balance of composition or color that produces a harmonious effect. • What is the focus of the message?

  17. Summary • The basis of good page design is use of design elements and their thoughtful application in the form of design principles. • Clearly identify what you are trying to accomplish— use design to convey your message. • Brainstorm alternatives (Comps)
