Streetscape Water Street Gateway A Centretown Concept
Concept: That the City of Cornwall consider the creation of gateway features at the corner of Water Street and Brookdale Avenue that welcomes U.S. travelers to the city and directs traffic to the waterfront and our two small business districts. An associated banner project will help denote this district for visitors and area residents alike. Gateway concept – Water Street
The look: Creation of a pair of gateway features at the corner of Water Street and Brookdale Avenue that welcomes U.S. travelers to the city and directs traffic to the waterfront and our two small-business districts. Wayfinding signage at the pumphouse and the addition of greenery will augment beautification work along this corridor. Cost: $35,000 each
The look (continued): The features can be sourced locally and created with concrete and brick that will stand the test of time. As this is an international crossing the inclusion of the Canadian flag is desirable. The addition of greenery will help augment beautification along this busy municipal corridor. Cost: $35,000 each
Banners: New triangular banners can be added to existing and new light standards on the median along Water Street, that denote this district. These banner concepts have been approved by both BIAs and can be created with material that will mitigate wind damage. Cost: $250 each
Banners: The waterfront banners follow the same design and theme of similar triangular banners that are planned for both the Downtown BIA and Le Village. Cost: Borne by the BIAs
Banners: Completely bilingual, with the exception of the ‘Downtown’ and ‘Le Village’ designations in order to maintain the identity of those locations. *Community feedback required*
Banners: Banners can be affixed to existing and new light standards to denote the district for motorists and pedestrians. In this particular case a new pole would have to be installed.
Banners: Banners can be affixed to existing and new light standards to denote the district for motorists and pedestrians. Banners should be staggered, perhaps at regular intervals on every other light standard, to avoid saturation.
Budget: The execution of this project can be considered for the 2019 municipal budget and phased in over a period of a couple of years if this is more fiscally palatable. The city has already undertaken road resurfacing on Water Street and the creation of crosswalks that include interlocking brickwork. This is in place of work that was budgeted, but ultimately abandoned to add interlocking brick to the entire intersection at Brookdale Avenue and Water Street. Gateway features x2 $70,000 Banners (Water Street) x32 $8,000 Banners installation x32 $10,000 Landscaping (pumphouse, gateways) $7,500 Wayfinding signage (pumphouse) $4,500 Total: $100,000 Gateway concept – Water Street
