Our Recruitment Area • Edinburg, Texas population about 79 thousand in 2011. It is the county seat. • Have you heard of these towns • UTPA is a primarily a commuter campus serving about 20,000 students (2500 who are EF’s)
Recruitment at UTPA CAMP • We have an 80% funded Admissions Officer • The other 20% he is funded by our VP’s office to work closely with the admissions office & Student Financial Services Office • We have 2 collegiate G-Force mentors who assist the Admissions Counselor • They are funded by THECB • They are college students (CAMP Alumni)
The recruitment plan • We recruit from 3 counties in our area. • We visit 30 high schools each fall from the 3 counties. • We host a “Migrant Counselors Workshop” each fall • We host a “CAMP Exploration Days” on campus in conjunction with our Educational Service Center • All students that apply to UTPA are asked “The migrant question”
Documentation Part I • Must have’s • How did you determine they are eligible (COE) • How did you determine they are US citizens or eligible citizens (passport, birth certificate, INS letter) • How did you determine they are first year students (school admissions letter, school internal database print out, HS transcript) • How did you determine need (needs assessment)
Documentation Part II • Good to have • Financial Aid award letters • Student Essay • Student Resume • Letters of recommendations • Emergency Contact info. • What else do you have in entrance file
Now we have 150 applications • Who is eligible? • Review guidelines if needed • How do we check? • We contact the education service center/HS • We use COE
We still have 100 applications • We use an admissions committee • Make up of the committee • Who would your committee be • The director and admissions counselor don’t sit on this committee • The committee only reviews eligible student applications • Sample needs plan
Getting them in • The admissions counselor works on getting all 150 into the university. • 70 get an invitation to form part of CAMP others are invited to get services from MSS and be on a CAMP waiting list. • We have a strong list by March each year. • Relationships with migrant counselors & parents.
Recruitment Plan • Helps to assure you are fulfilling all stated objectives/activities stated in proposal • Helps to work smarter not harder • Re-evaluate recruitment efforts • Assures you are accepting the student with the most need: • Financial • Academic • Social
