  3. Key Creative Team • The Producers role is to organize and control matters such as raising the funding for the production, hiring important personnel and sorting out contracts and other managerial tasks. The producer takes part in the project from start to finish. • The Director has the important role of overseeing the whole creative parts of the film which includes controlling the flow of the plot of the film, directing actors, choosing filming locations, managing the camera movements, how the lighting is used and finally the timing of the score. • The Screenwriters job is to research as much as possible into the story of the film which includes development and the narrative, writing up the screenplay (Script) and handing it over to the Producer. Screenwriters are said to usually be freelancers who come up and pitch their ideas to producers hoping that their ideas will be bought. The ideas tend to to be based of books/ novels, existing scripts or true stories.

Production Department • The Executive Producer is usually someone who helps funding by investing in the film to get shares in the the final product. • The Line Producer is in control of managing the film budget and splits it between the different departments. • The Production Manager’s main role is to make sure that the filming is kept within schedule and to also make sure it doesn’t go over budget. • The Production Coordinator is given the role of organizing logistics, this can vary from hiring crew, equipment rental and making bookings. • The Production Secretary provides assistance around the production office. • The Production Accountant is responsible for managing the finances and making records of purchases and rentals. • The Post-Production Supervisor makes sure that all roles involved in post are coordinated and have communication between each other.

Script Department • The Story Producer has the responsibility of keeping a story consistent eg: on a TV series they will create an overall story line. • The Script Editor goes over the screen writing and helps the screenwriter identify mistakes to develop and strengthen the screenplay. • The Script Coordinator creates a draft script for each episode and annotating it for the production team.

Location Department • The Location Manager has to find and secure locations for the production and must coordinate the logistics which involves permits and costs. • The Location Assistant assists the manager and must be first to arrive on set. They have to maintain the cleanliness of the set and must organize area complaints. • The Location Scout has the main role of going out and finding locations whilst also taking into context the budget restriction, the convenience of the location and production services.

  7. Camera Department • The Director of Photography and Cinematography is the head of the camera and lighting departments. They work in conjunction with the films director. • The Camera Operator is in control of operating the camera DoP and the main director. • The Camera Assistants take control of looking after the focus of the shots, and making sure the footage is being processed.

  8. Sound Department • The Production Sound Mixer is responsible for all sound on set and off. They choose what type of microphone to use and how to record the audio. • The Boom Operator has to make sure the microphone is in the right position picking up the right audio and must not be scene in shot.

Grip Department • The Key Grip is the manager on set for rigging equipment such as lighting and works along with the lighting department. • The Best Boy and they work along side the manager and helps with the rigging. • Dolly Grip has the important role of operating the dolly, they place the track down for the shots and wither push or pull the dolly along the track.

  10. Electrical Department • The Gaffer is the manager of the lighting and sets up the lighting according to the floor plan. • The Best Boy (Electrical) works along side the gaffer to make sure everything is going as planned. • The Lighting Technician is in control of the lighting.

  11. Art Department • The Production Designer must create the physical products such as settings, costumes, Props and character make-up. • The Art Director watches over the artists and craftsman to see if everything is going as planned. • The Set Designer is usually an architect who helps identify the interior spaces of settings and helps the Production Designer.

  12. Hair and Make-Up • The Make-up Artist works on the visual appearance of the actors by using make-up and working on their hair. This involves prosthetics such as masks etc... • The Hairdresser has to style the actors hair and to keep it consistent throughout the production stages.

  13. Wardrobe • The Costume Designer is responsible for the costumes and clothing worn by the characters. This involves the style of the the clothes, the fabric, the size and the colours. • The Costume Supervisor works closely with the costume designer to supervise paperwork and the budget for the department.

  14. Post Production • The Film Editor is responsible for assembling the footage shot during production and works closely with the director to put it all together. • The Assistant editor is responsible for locating the footage and preparing it for the editor and director. • The Online Editor goes over the finished product of the main film editor and adds post visual effects, titles and applies colour correction.

  15. Visual Effects • The Visual Effects Supervisor is In charge of the visual effects department. • The Compositor is a visual effects specialist who generates 2D and 3D imagery and animation and text. • The Roto/Paint Artist manually creates compositing projects. They may also paint visual information out of scene. • The Matte Painter draws or paints sets or extends exiting sets.

  16. Post Sound and Music • The Sound Designer is in charge of the sound in post-production. • The Dialogue Editor is responsible for assembling and editing all dialogue in the soundtrack. • The Sound Editor is responsible for assembling all sound effects such as explosions, gun fire, raging car engines etc… • The Composer is responsible for writing up the score for the film.

  17. Other Production Crew • The Casting Director works with the Director and Producer and suggests possible actors for certain roles and helps arrange these interviews. • The Storyboard Artists visualize and sketch up the storyboard for each and every shot with as much detail as possible. • The Caterers provide food and beverages for all the crew and includes ovens, water and gas.

  18. Interactive Media • The Producer identifies and explains the requirements or purpose ensuring that the ideas and objective is understood and maintained by everyone involved in making this production. This role is difficult and requires expert skills in business, management and design.
