Cultivating aGospel Shaped Attitude Understanding and Living the Beatitudes By Dr. Joe Buchanan
SUBMISSION “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5
Meaning • Greeks had saying “meek as a lion.” • Praus was used to describe a horse that had been broken.
“Meekness is essentially a true view of oneself, expressing itself in attitude and conduct with respect to others. The man who is truly meek is the one who is truly amazed that God and man can think of him as well as they do and treat him as well as they do.” Martyn-Lloyd Jones
Exemplified by Moses “Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.” Numbers 12:3
1. Submissive to the Will of God • Before Moses could be used to lead God’s people, he had to learn to be submissive. • God will not use anyone who is not fully dependent upon Him.
God uses people who are wholly and completely dependent upon Him… God cultivates the attitude of meekness in our lives so that we will learn to be submissive to His will and the control of the Holy Spirit.
2. Yielding to the Holy Spirit • Meekness is more than mere self-control.
Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married, for he had married a Cushite woman. And they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it. Numbers 12:1-2
A Few Observations • Opposition arose during an opportune moment. • Opposition came from unlikely place. • Opposition was seen by God
Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.” Numbers 12:3
Our natural reaction when challenged or opposed is to retaliate, but what we need to learn to do is to remain submissive to will of God and yielded to the control of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:17-32 • When we live in self-dependence and rely on ourselves rather than on God, we will always produce the “works of the flesh.” • But when submitted to the control of the Holy Spirit, we will produce something better.
Genuine Christian character is never developed by self-discipline alone but by consistently cultivating an attitude of meekness, which results in surrendering control of our lives to the Holy Spirit.
3. Being Genuinely Content “Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment.” 1 Timothy 6:6
The Emptiness of this World “Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil that I had expended in doing it, and behold all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:11
Contentment comes as the result of having an honest assessment of our lives. There is a direct relationship between our understanding of the gospel and our level of contentment.
Cultivating This Attitude in Your Life • Embrace that You Are Created in the Image of God • You are not an accident of nature • Created to have a relationship with God • You life has purpose!
Cultivating This Attitude in Your Life • Embrace that You Are Created in the Image of God • Acknowledge Your Sin • Run to the cross for forgiveness • Maintain a future orientation
Meekness is developed as we learn to live within the tension of what we used to be and what we will one day become. Our past reminds us of how bad we used to be and of how completely dependent we are on God’s grace… But on the other hand, the Bible also teaches that we have a future.
