Cultivating aGospel Shaped Attitude Understanding and Living the Beatitudes By Dr. Joe Buchanan
Pursuing Purity “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8
Pharisaical Approach to Purity • Pharisees became obsessed with maintaining the ritual purity demanded by the law • Focused on what they ate and drank without drilling down to the core issues of the moral law. • Obsessed with the external demands and neglected the deeper, spiritual sense of the law
“Moral purity requires that we go beyond mere external obedience and strive to become genuinely pure in heart.”
What is your Heart? • The word “heart” appears 841 times in the Bible. • Sometimes refers to the physical organ • Most cases refers to the seat of our motives and attitudes.
The heart is the control center for our mind, will, and emotions. It is the core of our entire being, determining how we act and behave. In computer terms, our heart represents the operating system of our life.”
The Condition of Your Heart • Determines everything about your life. • How we think • How we behave • How we relate to other people
“Keep Your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the springs of life.”Proverbs 4:23
“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
“And I will give you a new heart and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statues and be careful to obey my rules.” Ezekiel 36:26-27
1. A Pure Heart has been Cleansed From Sin • Pure means to be cleansed from dirt, filth, or pollution. • Soiled cloths cleansed • Military cleansed of malcontents
Day of Atonement • Leviticus 16 • Ritually purified the Israelites from the sins they had committed in the previous year. • Pointed people to the permanent purification for sin that Jesus would accomplish on the cross.
“For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” Hebrews 9:13-14
2. A Pure Heart is Singularly Focused on Pleasing God. • Loves God Exclusively (Matthew 22:37) • Avoids Sin (2 Corinthians 7:1) • Stays Focused (James 4:8)
The key to growing in the Christian life is the ability to focus our lives on carrying out the things God has instructed us to do, without getting distracted.
