  1. Low Energy Building DesignGroup B Embedded Generation Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  2. The building • Living area of a Research Centre • Located in remote Scotland • Can be considered as a student accommodation place • 16 Bedrooms • Common kitchen • Common spaces: a lounge and a library Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  3. The Design • Made up of four different zones: bedrooms, kitchen, lounge and library. • Each zone is composed of modules • Occupancy: • 52 during Summer (June 1st to August 31st), • 16 during Winter (September 1st to May 31st) • Linked with a work building. Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  4. Demand profiles • profiles generated via simulation program ESP-r • they focus on weekdays and weekends demand during winter and summer time • Simulation are based on typical weeks for winter and summer, results are for one day of these typical weeks • the model simulated is made up of 4 zones • Profiles: space heating/cooling, small power, lighting, water heating Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  5. Space heating Winter weekends Winter weekdays Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  6. Space cooling Summer weekends Summer weekdays Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  15. Images • Collector Efficiency of 35%, • Collectors Orientated South. All Solar Data from CIBSE Guide Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  16. Collectors Orientated Due South. Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  17. Supply Matching Supply Sources to Demand Profiles Utilising thermal storage e.g. rock stores, hot water, we are able to shift the times when we use the Heat Pump. Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  18. Supply Matching Supply Sources to Demand Profiles The use of geothermal requires 1/3 power to heat e.g. 6kW heat pump uses 2kW Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  19. Supply Matching Supply Sources to Demand Profiles Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  25. Supply Matching Supply Sources to Demand Profiles Group B: Romain Jauffres, Karen Kennedy, Pedro Ros Zuazua, Ulrich Sanson

  26. Conclusion At present the Power Supply and Demand profiles are very mismatched, by continuing to work on demand side management and also looking at methods of power/energy storage we hope to be able to create a better match.
