Aim of project • Is to design 3 housing types which will form a 20 dwelling net zero carbon community, located in rural Ayrshire • Designed to Code Level 5 or better
What is the Code for Sustainable Homes • A measure of the ‘whole home’ as a complete package • Consists of 9 categories • Energy and CO2 emissions • Pollution • Water • Materials • Management • Health and well-being • Surface water run-off • Waste management • Ecology • Credits are awarded if individual targets are achieved. • Aim for today: to go through each of the nine categories and show how our community has achieved a code level 5.
Code 5 • Materials • Use of environmentally impact materials • Straw Bales, timber , Sheep’s wool, timber framed windows • Low in embodied energy • Source of materials • Responsibly sourced e.g. Timber certified • Locally sourced from site • Paved surfaces from recycled and sustainable sources Credits: 21/24 6.3%
Code 5 • Water • Internal water usage: • Code level 5 & 6 total • <80 litre/person/day • External water usage: • Rainwater collection • Washing car & garden, etc • Grey water collection • Washing dishes, washing machine, etc
Code 5 • Phytodepuration System • Natural treatment of waste water due to plants Advantages to the system • Simplicity • Cost effective • Efficiency • Reliability
Code 5 • Surface water run-off • Bio-filtration • Grey water and rainwater harvesting • Site out of flood risks 4 points 2.2 %
Code 5 • Waste Management • Storage of non recyclable waste and recyclable waste provided by local authority and local authority collection • Construction Site Waste management plan 6 points 5.4%
Code 5 • Pollution • Low GWP of insulants : CO2 • No NOxemission 4 points 2.8 %
Code 5 • Management • Home user guide provided • Considerate Constructor Scheme • Responsibly sourced timber and report and targeting for water consumption 6 points 6.6 %
Code 5 • Health and well being • Day lighting • Detached houses (sound insulation) • Garden (private space) • Community car park • Disabled access 12 points 14 %
Code 5 • Energy and CO2 • PV, Solar Thermal, and GSHP (with seasonal storage) • Timber frame with straw bales, MVHR (air tight and good HLP) • Day lighting and efficient lamps • Drying space • A++ appliances • Study room
Code 5 • Ecology • Low ecological value of site (Pit bing reclaimed land) • Consultation of an ecologist to improve the ecological value of site after constructions of dwellings 6 points 8 %
Conclusion • Total credits achieved – 85.6% • Code 5 – 84% • Our community has been effectively designed to Code Level 5 forCode for Sustainable Homes • Further work to undertake in order to achieve Code Level 6: • Provide external lighting • Secure cycle storage • Provide safety and security for the community
