  1. Egyptian Achievements The Egyptians made lasting achievements in writing, art, and architecture.

  2. Egyptian Writing • Hieroglyphics are the Egyptian writing system • They wrote on papyrus – a long-lasting, paperlike material made from reeds • More than 600 symbols. • Can be written up, down, left, and right. • Government records, historical records, science texts, and medical manuals.

  3. The Rosetta Stone • A huge, stone slab inscribed with hieroglyphics • Also had Greek writing. • Scholars who knew Greek were able to figure out what the hieroglyphics said.

  4. Egypt’s Great Temples • They not only built the pyramids but also massive temples as homes for the gods. • Sphinxes were all over the place. They are half human half animal. • Obelisks were on both sides of the gate to get in. • They were huge columns painted with gods and pharaohs.

  6. Egyptian Art – filled tombs of pharaohs • Paintings • Artists painted on canvas, papyrus, pottery, plaster, and wood. • Only the elite could enter the tombs

  7. King Tut’s Tomb • Wasn’t raided until 1922 • Archaeologists found many treasures • Jewelry • Robes • Masks • They think he was only 18 or 19 when he died.
