Explain how problems in Japanese society and the opening of Japan to other countries led to Meiji Restoration. • In the 16th century the Tokugawa shogunate limited foreign trade rights and adopted a policy of isolation. • Japanese citizens were not allowed to leave the country nor were foreigners allowed in. • In 1853 a fleet of American ships sailed into Edo Bay, breaking Japan’s isolation policy. • The United States set up trading rights of their own, Britain, Britain, France, and Russia. • The daimyo and samurai overthrew the shogun in 1867 and "restored" the emperor to power. • The new emperor took the name Meiji resulting in a period called the Meiji restoration.
Describe the main reforms under the Meiji government • The Meiji reformers wanted to create a new political and social system with a modern industrial economy. • Under the Meiji constitution all citizens where equal before the law. • A legislature was formed but the emperor still had absolute power. • With support from the government, power banking, industrial families known as zaibatsu ruled over the industrial empire. • The industrial revolution was booming under the Meiji restoration by the 1890s.
New Global Patterns Japan After the daimyo and samurai overthrew the shogun in 1867 a new emperor took power and restored the dynasty with new reforms, since these reforms had a positive effect this was called the “Meiji Restoration” A new political and social system was created under the Meiji government. They adopted a constitution where everyone was equal, and a new legislature was formed. Under this government the Industrial Revolution finally boomed in Japan 1890s.
