  1. Welcome to your first FRQ. (Free-Response Question)

  2. The APES exam has 4 FRQ’s • Synthesis & evaluation • Synthesis & evaluation • Data set: you interpret a table or graph • Document based: apply your knowledge to a newspaper article or ad.

  3. FRQ’s are 40% of exam score

  4. You’ll have 90 minutes for 4 FRQ’s That’s about 22 minutes for each question.

  5. Later, we’ll work with the time limit. Today, we’re just going to practice a few basic strategies.

  6. Divide the 22 minutes: • Prepare: 1 or 2 minutes to think and outline • Write: 16 to 19 minutes • Proof-read: 1 or 2 minutes

  7. Prepare • First, read the question. • Next, underline the task. • Then, close your eyes for a minute to let your mind stretch over the question.

  8. Preparation, continued • Jot down some ideas, words • Close your eyes again. THINK. • Write a list of points you want to include in your answer.

  9. Let’s do it again:“How do you prepare?” • Read, underline • Think • Jot down words • Think • List • ....................... see you in a couple of min.

  10. Now you’re prepared to write. • Write with black or blue ink pen. • Write complete sentences. • No introductory paragraph. • No concluding paragraph. • No frills, poetry, or cutsy ideas. • Scientists just want the answer. • And ……

  11. Sound scientific • Use specific environmental vocabulary • Avoid gobble-di-goop • No matter how difficult the question is, try to think of something scientific to write.

  12. Take about 18 or 19 minutes to write your answers. (you’re going to save a couple minutes at the end to proof read.)

  13. Go!! see you in 16 to 19 minutes.

  14. Proof-read: You’re going to reread your essay to make it better. • Complete sentences? capital letter & period? • Can you add a word or another example to increase the value of your answer? • To save time, no white-out and black-outs. Instead draw a single line through the error.

  16. Stop. Now, you’re done.

  17. Before we actually grade your FRQ,

  18. Take some time to reflect. What did you learn today?

  19. How will you make your next FRQ better?

  20. And do you see why it is so important to do your own work and thinking? Answer: So you’ll be prepared for the APES exam.

  21. Do you realize that by the time of the exam in May, you’re going to excel at writing FRQs!! Because we’re going to practice writing lots and lots of FRQs.

  22. Maybe you’ll even be able to say:FRQs will be the best part of my AP grade! The end.
