First Leader: Zhu Yuanzhang • He was the first and only commoner (peasant) in the history of China to become an emperor • Grew up an orphan, went to live with Buddhist monks • Went off on own, started to gather followers
First Leader: Zhu Yuanzhang • Joined forces with other rebel leaders • Took over Beijing from the Mongols that were in charge • Declared himself leader and chose Nanjing as the capital • Wanted to rebuild a China torn apart by disasters

Forbidden City • Transferred the capital from Nanjing to Beijing • Built the Forbidden City (Imperial Palace) • Nobody could enter without emperor’s permission • Center of government in China
Forbidden City • The leader Zhu Di wanted to move the capital to Beijing in 1403 • Felt it was a strong place for the military to be centered in northern China • Common people were not allowed to enter Forbidden City complex
Forbidden City • Divided into three sections • Enclosed by a moat and a wall • 800 rooms, 3 auditoriums, 100 offices • Completed in 1421 • No longer off limits to public
Fall of the Ming • Zhu Di felt there was no limit to his abilities. • Soldiers were not getting paid, and started forming rebel groups • Rebels invaded the city, and Zhu Di hung himself • Manchu invaders took over the Forbidden City
