DRAFT Conclusions of the follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests16 December 2003 Ph. Lebrun
Background • In spite of remarkable progress achieved in 2003, reception tests of LHC cryomagnets remain a critical issue, with the long-sought development of series magnet production rates in industry • The criticality of this issue was foreseen in 2002, due to well identified structural and circumstantial causes; we therefore decided to follow it closely, through an array of actions, among which periodic reviews • review of reception tests of LHC cryomagnets of 23 July 2003 • this review of 16 December 2003 • Although it provided comprehensive data on test operation and results obtained in the second half of 2003, the December 2003 review proved unconclusive • insufficiently processed or inhomogeneous data • intense discussions which the agenda could not accommodate • An ad hoc meeting of the Group Leaders concerned was called on 9 January 2004, to provide decisive answers to a list of questions raised by the review Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
Aims of the review • Analyse the results obtained and the experience gained in the second half of 2003, with reference to the findings and recommendations of the July 2003 review • Identify and correct remaining difficulties • review capacity limits of test infrastructure and equipment • review contents, constraints and resource requirements of the test programs, with the aim of further streamlining • review organization of work • Agree on updated test plan for 2004 and later • Involve all concerned parties Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003

Programme Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
Conclusions [1/5] • Significant progress achieved, with 90 magnets tested in 2003, however insufficient, as backlog of untested magnets built up to 85 by the end of the year Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
Conclusions [2/5] • Bench occupancy still a factor of ~2 above expected, with delays on all phases of sequence • connection & removal: 24 h planned, 30 h observed average + 33 h waiting time! • intervention by ICS for magnet connection/removal on weekends (A. Poncet) • pumpdown: 12 h planned, 13 h • explore possibility of shortening pumpdown (L. Tavian) • leak search: planned during pumping, + 15 h observed avg • define and enforce leak-testing procedure by ALLS (L. Tavian) • cooldown: 24 h planned, 46 h observed avg • warmup: 12 h planned, 32 h observed avg • increase cooldown/warmup flow-rate (higher Psuction, 3rd circulator) (L.Tavian) • cold tests: 36 h slot, 72 h observed avg due to • more than 2 hi-field quenches & thermal cycle • sequencing between benches • insufficient coordination between teams • review conditions of “cryo O.K.” flag (L. Tavian) • implement Test Tracking System for uniform & up-to-date information of teams involved (L. Tavian) Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
L. Walckiers Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
Conclusions [3/5] • Power tests • large incidence of hi-field quenches & thermal cycles on test programme • overall cryogenic capacity of test station sets limit to number of quenches (6 hi-field quenches + 2-3 magnet subcoolings per day) • 2 hi-field quenches are sufficient to assess electrical integrity of magnet • no strong technical case to measure retraining, hence no use of thermal cycle on series magnets • revised procedure & flow chart for power tests (Action L. Rossi) • Magnetic measurements • adequate cold/warm correlations for multipoles • importance of field integral and field angle measurements • good correlation between apertures • implement field integral & angle measurement in one aperture, consider replacement of long shaft by stretched wire for series (Action L. Walckiers) Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003

Conclusions [4/5] • Management & organization • reaffirm executive responsibilities of hierarchical line • MTM group leader • Test Operation section leader • Shift leader • reinforce leverage of Test Operation section leader on services • equipment support teams in MTM & other groups • industrial support • reaffirm consultative scientific role of test coordinators • provide adequate training to operators, shift leaders, test coordinators • improve representation in and functioning of Test Operation weekly meeting • develop & implement test assessment and follow-up tools (Actions L. Walckiers) Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
Conclusions [5/5] • Completion of the test station & future tests • Restart operation in January 2004 with 8 benches operational • Availability of remaining benches • B2 1 March 2004 • B1 15 March 2004 • A2 15 April 2004 • A1 22 April 2004 • Allocation of 2 benches to SSS series tests (D1 & D2) • 160 dipoles & 55 SSS tested by mid-2004 • 2 magnets/day from mid-2004 onwards • Catching up with the backlog • mostly composed of cross-section 2 dipoles • allocate 4 benches to tests of backlog magnets, out of which 2 configured for tests without anticryostats • only perform magnetic measurements on cross-section 3 dipoles • establish detailed test programme of backlog magnets (Action L. Rossi) Follow-up review of LHC cryomagnet tests 16 Dec 2003
