What is Geothermal Energy • In Greek- Geo- Means Earth and –Therme means heat. • Geothermal energy is produced by heat within the Earth. • The process . First steam goes through a pipe then the steam then drives the turbines powering the generators
How Is It Used Today • 1.It can power houses & factories as well • 2. It can heat houses • 3. No fuel is used to power the plants, so that saves money • 4. It can heat water in fish farms • 5. It can be used to heat showers and baths
Advantages of Geothermal Energy • 1.It doesn’t pollute and it’s clean. • 2. They put the waste (extra) back into the hot rock. • 3.It’s cheap to use. • 4. It’s a renewable power. • 5. Doesn’t use fossil fuels.
Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy • 1. Only available in some regions such as California USA & India • 2. The site may stop producing steam. • 3. Harmful gases may escape during drilling. • 4. It takes away soil & nutrients while drilling . • 5. Its not portable.
Coal • 1. Coal is a nonrenewable resource • 2. People have used it since 13th century. • 3. Stage 1: Peat forms 60% Carbon. Stage 2: Lignite forms 70% Carbon. Stage 3: Bituminous Coal forms 80% Carbon. Stage 4: (LAST STAGE) Anthracite forms 90% Carbon.
How Is It Used Today 1. Production of electricity. 2. Used for heat. 3.Iron and steel productions 4. Cement manufacturing. 5. Production of Coal Tar.
Advantages • 1. They’re easily combustible • 2. Very cheap to mine. • 3. Burning coal can be used anywhere. • 4. Widely and easily shipped around the world. • 5. Most coal is rather simpler to fine.
Disadvantages of Coal • 1. Releases Carbon Monoxide • 2. Can scar a landscape when trying to mine. • 3. Can cause acid precipatation. • 4. Can cause health problems to miners. • 5. Can increase the greenhouse gases in the O-Zone Layer.
