THE PONY EXPRESS A Publication of the Upper Midwest Region of The Shelby American Automobile Club TOP21 CHARITY CAR SHOW AT SHAKOPEE FORD In the last issue of the Pony Express, I referred to the planning of the July car show as to putting together a successful garden. That is planning of events and the timing of events for this year’s show where some panned out and others did not. Well as in Garden terms, the Garden (July show) fried out! Roughly 80 cars braved the heat and the not so nice humidity. Due to the heat and the forecast coming out of South Dakota, the trophies were handed out at 1:15 pm. as opposed to the normal 3:00 p.m. time. This decision was well accepted by all in attendance as many were inside the air-conditioned dealership as opposed to being on the lot. The attendance did not affect our spirits though, nor did appear to affect the spirit of many people who were there. One thing that I was extremely proud of was the comments from the people. As club members walked around, talked to car owners, stopped at the three charity booths, the people were impressed with the membership and I kept hearing nice things about the membership. You all deserved a pat on your back. The three charity groups on hand for the show, Breast Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Minnesota, and Drive for Kids were pleased with the people who stopped by to ask questions and small talk. I asked the MS group if they would sell water as I felt it was important that we have water available all day. They did and enjoyed the day as well. I will be working with several people who will assist me as to marketing ideas to make sure we hit the 150 mark again next year. It is important that we rebound quickly for a show of this size. Super thanks to all those who showed up Saturday night which took place very quickly as the dealership started moving cars at 4:30 p.m. Sunday night went well too when placing the cars back. Of course I thank those people who were there during the day of the show as well to help in any way possible. I especially appreciated the moral support as the day went on. This year we had many great contributors to both the door prizes as well as prizes for the trivia questions. In addition, many items were donated for the gift bags. They are listed as following: Auto Zone of Shakopee, O’ Reilly Auto Parts, Summit Racing Equipment, Perkins, Chanhassen Dinner Theater, Ordway of St. Paul, Stoner (Invisible Glass), Meguiar’s, Anchor Bank, Running Aces, Canterbury Park, Brunswick Bowl, Baker’s Square, Pinstripes, Mrs. Gerry’s Kitchens and Shakopee Ford. A special thanks to Chris Gulbrandson of Shakopee Ford who was my contact person and was with me side by side throughout the process. His staff was equally very supportive. This year we will be cruising to Fortune Bay Resort and Casino in Tower MN. along the beautiful Boundary Waters. We will meet @ 8:00 Saturday morning @ Village Inn Restaurant @ 4848 E. Viking Blvd., Wyoming MN. 55092. We will have a nice breakfast there and then depart for Tower MN. and Fortune Bay Resort and Casino. We will stop on the way for lunch, stretching, visiting and taking pictures. Upon arriving at the Resort we will get checked in and enjoy the fun, entertainment and fine food Fortune Bay has to offer.   5. . 1970 Ford King Cobra by the Auto Editors of Consumer Guide Some muscle cars were born of racing necessity. Some, like the 1970 Ford King Cobra, were stillborn. Ford enjoyed great success on NASCAR's high-banked oval tracks in the late 1960s. The tapered-nose, fastback 1969 Torino Talladegas and their Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II cousins had the perfect wind-cheating shape for NASCAR superspeedway racing. Their dominance goaded Chrysler to develop and produce the outrageous Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird. Against Chrysler's winged warriors, the Talladega and Cyclone began to lose some of their competitive edge. The 1970 Ford King Cobra Specifications Wheelbase, inches: 117 Weight, lbs: 3,774 Number built: 2 or 3 prototypes Base price: N/A Standard Engine Type: ohv V-8 Displacement, cid: 429 Fuel system: 1 x 4bbl. Compression ratio: 11.3:1 Horsepower @ rpm: 370 @ 5400 (est.) Torque @ rpm: 450 @ 3400 (est.) Representative Performance 0-60 mph, sec: 6.0 (est) 1/4 mile, sec. @ mph: 14.4 @ 101 (est.) . Based on the redesigned Torino, the 1970 Ford King Cobra had a radically tapered nose intended for aerodynamic advantage on high-speed stock-car tracks. Ford was required to build street examples to qualify it for NASCAR racing. Worse, Ford's new-for-1970 Torino "Sportsroof" models were not as aerodynamic as the slick '69s. Since their Mopar rivals had pulled out all the stops in the development of the Daytona and Superbird, Ford set to work on a similarly slippery droop-snout front end for its new Torino model. Engineers added a wild, wind-cheating nose with a radically sloped hood to the stock 1970 Torino Cobra body. The headlights were tunneled into sugar-scoop cutouts in the front fenders, similar in appearance to the Datsun 240Z sports car. These cutouts were designed to be capped with headlight covers for racing, making for an even slicker profile. The grille opening was located beneath the blade-like front bumper. However, several factors conspired to kill the King Cobra before it saw production. Preliminary testing showed that the experimental King Cobra modifications caused high-speed instability, and didn't make the new car faster than its Talledega and Cyclone Spoiler forebears. Most Ford racing teams ended up sticking with their 1969 superspeedway cars for the 1970 NASCAR season. Further, Detroit's unfettered focus on all-out performance was coming to an end. The social climate was changing, and the specter of high insurance rates and impending government regulations loomed large. Signaling the major shift in priorities, new Ford president Lee Iacocca slashed the company's racing budget by 75 percent in mid-1970. Ford dropped its factory support of NASCAR racing entirely for the 1971 season. There was plenty of excitement about the project. The editors of Motor Trend saw fit to put the King Cobra prototype on the cover of their October 1969 issue. The accompanying story made bold -- if unsubstantiated -- claims about the machine's performance potential, and urged readers to write to Ford to express their desire to purchase a production King Cobra. In the end, only two or three King Cobra prototypes were produced. NASCAR team owner Bud Moore bought the No.1 prototype from Ford in 1971, and has preserved it in original condition. Under the sloped hood is a Cobra Jet 429 V-8 similar to the engines that powered production 1970 Torino Cobras. This stillborn supercar is a remarkable remnant of an unrestrained era in automotive history, a time when victories at the race track were a driving force behind new product development. It's also a reminder of how fast the automotive marketplace can change. .

Never lean against someone's show car. 2. If you are registering someone's car, do not put your hands on the person's show car or lean against their car. 3. Never rub up against someone's show car. Jeans will scratch the paint 4. Do not touch someone's show car, as they say look but don't touch. a. The slightest touch can put fine scratches in the paint. b. The oils from your fingers could cause paint damage 5. Do not allow your children to touch or rub up against someone's show car. 6. Be especially careful with baby strollers around someone's show car. 7. Do not reach into someone's show car, unless you have asked the owner and they have given their permission. 8. Do not throw fliers into someone's show car, It may have not been judged as yet and could cost points off. 9. Provide a modifications list to the judge, from the front to back of the car, if modified and being judged at an MCA show. 10. Only answer the questions posed by the judges, while they are judging your pride and joy. Group Travel Instructions for Those Attending The Mustang Club of America Show August 12th-August 14th Approximately 35 members and friends have cars entered in the Des Moines Mustang Club of America National Show. The show is located at the Holiday Inn Airport, 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA, 50321. Remember, once you park your car, the car cannot be removed from the show grounds during show hours. Members will be driving to the show on Thursday August 11th and Friday August 12th. If a group of members enters registration together, that group will most likely be able to park together. If you are planning on driving down on Thursday, call Rolf Erickson at 612-867-7343 or email jre280@comcast.net and we will try to put a group together. For those traveling on Friday, Dan Mattila will be leading a group leaving his shop in Blaine. Dan will have his flatbed tow truck on the trip for any unexpected breakdowns. The shop is located at 8858 Xylite St. NE. The group will stop at the rest stop just south of mile marker 76 on 35W at approximately 10:30 to meet with anyone not leaving from Blaine. Be there early. The group will then drive down 35W, stopping for lunch at 12:00 at the Diamond Jo Casino (777 Diamond Jo Lane Northwood, IA 50459-8801). The casino is located at Iowa exit 214 on 35W. After a one hour lunch, the group will continue on to Des Moines, arriving at approximately 3:30 for check in.
