THE PONY EXPRESS A Publication of the Upper Midwest Region of The Shelby American Automobile Club January Meeting Notice: The January meeting is being moved to the ballroom on the upper level of the Officer’s Club. This is to provide greater accessibility for those who may have a difficult time negotiating the stairs. We will use the bar in the VIP Room on the main level. President’s Corner Holy Cow!!! It’s 2012 already! Kathie and I hope all of you and your families had a Happy and Safe Holiday. With any luck, you got that special present that you have been waiting for-a new set of wheels, the big screen TV or a diamond necklace or bracelet (female version of a new set of wheels or headers). While ours was kind of quiet, Kathie and I did get one very nice present this year. Actually, it was our daughter Andrea who got the present, an engagement ring from her “favorite” guy, John. No date has been set, but we are assuming it will be sometime in 2012. John is a really good guy, treats her well and is willing to put up with her “stuff”. To top it all off, he is a car guy (or should I say, truck guy). He is a fan of the “pentastar” brand with those funny looking valve covers, but it is a start. From the club’s perspective, 2012 looks to be another busy and active years.  We have several fun events coming up, starting with the Winter Party. Pam Flaten has stepped up to head up the party, and from the sounds of things, she has some great ideas for the party. Look elsewhere in the newsletter for details, and at the monthly meeting, where she will have something more complete. There will also be some other events being planned, in addition to our two car shows later on this summer. I know I am planning to do a lot of fun driving this summer, and I hope you will do the same. I hope to see you at the monthly meeting, where more discussions will come forward. JR is survived by his father, Harry KalinowskiSr.; son Harry Kalinowski III; daughters Cassandra Kalinowskiand Selena Kalinowski; sister Mary Snare (Noel); and significant other Lynette Lindgren. He was preceded in death by his mother Darlene, son Jonathan, niece Jessica A. Snare, and step-mother Addie Kalinowski. The membership extends it’s condolences to all of JRs’ family and friends. We’ll all miss him.

4. St. Paul Ford Plant Closes ST. PAUL, Minn. -- It is the end of an era in St. Paul as the Twin Cities Ford assembly plant closed December 16th. The last Ford Ranger is expected to roll off the line Friday December 16th. Former and current workers are reflecting on the plant's storied past. At the turn of the last century, industry was booming and the Twin Cities was flourishing. In 1912, The Ford Motor Company opened a vehicle assembly plant in Minneapolis and a new facility on the banks of the Mississippi. In 1925, the St. Paul Ford assembly plant produced its first Model T. That was the start of an era. "By the time I was three years old...there was no question about it, I was going to be in the car industry," says Del Peterson who is both a car and history buff. He started working at the St. Paul plant in 1949. "First day I went to work there, first guy I ran into said you're crazy to come to work here. They're going to close this place. That was 1949," says  Peterson.  Peterson put in 42 years at the St. Paul assembly plant. He's collected photos, documents and many stories, remembering when workers rarely took off their Ford badges. "People were so proud about having a job at Ford that they would wear those badges to church," he says. At the St. Paul assembly plant, workers once mined silica to make glass, using tunnels under the plant. In the '40s, production supported the war effort and workers made armored vehicles. Early cars built by hand transformed into a high tech robotic operation. And so many models were built there, from the Model T to the Ford 1949. There was also the 1966 Galaxie and F-series truck in the '70 and '80s. The plant started making the Ford Ranger Supercab in 1985 and then the Ranger, until now. Declining sales, and a company decision that nothing else would be produced there, means the end. "As a kid I'd come here with my dad and he worked in the computer room and it was a huge computer room bigger than this building we're in now," says current Ford worker Art Wiegele. For him, working at Ford means following a family tradition and a long line of Ford workers. "My grandfather, two uncles, my dad and two brothers," says Wiegele. Today, Art is a union bargainer, but his life is about to change. Born and raised in Minnesota, Wiegele is moving his family to Kentucky to take a job at the Ford assembly plant there. "It's put food on my family's table since long before I was born, so it's hard for me to leave now because of that legacy," says Wiegele. The St. Paul plant closes with about 800 workers. Five years ago, there were 1,600. Some took buy-outs. Others will re-locate. "I really wanted to retire from here. I really thought I could," says Kari Altema, whose last day at the St. Paul plant was December 9th. Altema calls this a year of goodbyes as she also prepares to move to Kentucky. Head of the plant's women's committee, which does charity work, she's been at Ford 19 years. Altema is proud of her work and all the contributions women have made in this male-dominated profession. "The women of the plant. Strength - mentally, physically - they had to be tough because it was a tough environment to work in," says Altema. Starting with the efforts of women at wartime, the plant closes with more than 200 female auto workers. "I'm very proud of this workforce and what we've done in this community," she says And there is so much to be proud of for many generations. For Peterson, it's important to keep sharing his stories about the rich history forged here - a plant that for 86 years weaved its way into the fabric of St. Paul, building cars and community. "It's sad to see it go. But it was great while it lasted...and it lasted a lot longer than that fellow who poked me in the ribs in 1949 thought it was going to," says  Peterson. After the plant closes, the facility will then be decommissioned and all the equipment moved out. The property - more than 130 acres along the Mississippi River - is expected to go up for sale next year. Minneapolis StarTribune

5. Tire Pressure for Track Days Most car people like to drive fast once in a while. The best way to legally do this in your Shelby, Mustang or other car is at a “track day”. A handful of our members regularly drive their cars at high speed on various track days. Many more members have indicated that they would like to do this too, but for one reason or another they never do. If you have never driven on a road course at high speed, you should seriously consider it but before you do there are several things you should do. If you are not a competent mechanic, have you car checked out by a good shop. The tires, brakes and suspension should be thoroughly gone over. You may want to have a good set of brake pads installed and if you plan on running on the track regularly you may want to consider a set of tires for the track. You will also need a coolant recovery system on the car. After your car has been checked out, one of the most important considerations is tire pressure. Many people use their street tires for track days so it is especially to determine the correct tire pressures for your car. Good, cold, starting pressures ranges are listed below (never exceed your tires maximum cold rating): Front Wheel Drive Front 35-45 psi Rear 30-40 psi Front Engine/Rear Drive Front 35-45 psi Rear 30-40 psi Rear Engine/Rear Drive Front 35-45 psi Rear 35-40 psi Charlie Jones states it best in his Roadracers Corner in Mustang Times, November 2011: “Tire pressures are a very important tuning mechanism for your Mustang. Generally, Mustangs have a weight distribution resulting in more load on the front tires. This means tire pressures in front should be higher to get an evenly sized contact patch between the front and rear. A differential of 2-4 psi is a good starting point with the front pressure determined by reading temperatures across the face of the tread using a pyrometer. Adjust the pressure until an even reading is found between the inner, outer and center edges. Higher temperatures near the edges mean the pressure is too low, higher in the center means the opposite. After achieving an even temperature profile note the tire pressure while the tire is still hot and remember it. Now you can increase or reduce the rear tire pressure to change the handling characteristics of your Mustang. Generally as you lower the pressure rear grip will improve.” When taking tire temperatures, take 3 readings from the outside, middle, and inside of the tire. The Boy Scouts are in for “Vote with your Wallet”, The Shakopee Dance Line is determining if they can still do the concessions for August 12th due to the change in month.
