  2. About Balboa • Balboa sailed for Spain • Balboa explored on September 29, 1513 • Balboa was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain

  3. Early Life Balboa’s father had no influence nor wealth. After Christopher Columbus sailed in 1492, other ships gathered sailors and supplies at Moguer. The sailors that returned to the port from America, often told stories of the sea journeys they took. Balboa was attracted to the fame and wealth of the New World.

  4. What Balboa Was Looking For • Balboa was looking to colonize the mainland of South America. • Balboa found gold at a land called Tubanama. Which the Indians said it was located across mountains and near a great sea.

  5. Balboa’s Route Balboa went on many voyages. His first one was going around the Cape of Good Hope. It is beautiful but it was and is very dangerous for ships.

  6. A Big Accomplishment Balboa set out with 190 Spanish troops and 1,000 Indians to discover the great sea the Indians described. The troops and Indians came with him to cut their way across jungle-covered mountians of Panama. Balboa left the troops and the Indians on September 25, 1513 to climb the last mountain peak by himself. From the mountain peak he could see the gleaming blue waters of what is now the Pacific Ocean. Balboa called the waters the South Sea. He claimed the waters and the land it touched for the King of Spain on September 29th .

  7. Discoveries Made and How it Impacted the World • Balboa found the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. • When Balboa, the Indians, and the Spaniards reached the Pacific Ocean, Balboa and the men found pearls and gold. Which Balboa sent to the King of Spain.

  8. Interesting Facts • Balboa was the European to see the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. • Balboa was falsely accused by a governor and got arrested. He was sentenced to death. In January 1519, four friends of Balboa were beheaded with him. Their beheading was in the public square of Alca.
