Television and Movies! • 1952- First movie to become 3D, Bwana Devil • 1956- Scientists did a study on how many kids ages 10-16 watch TV. Average kid watched up to 6 hours of TV a day. • Popular show for the teenagers was Bandstand with Dick Clark. • Movies playing in the 1950’s-Father of the Bride, Cinderella, Asphalt Jungle, Singing in the Rain, The Quiet Man, Pillow Talk, and High Noon.

Fifties Leisure • 1950-”Peanuts” comic strip begins; Club Med begins. • 1952-The sweater girl becomes popular by Marilyn Monroe • 1953-First issue of Playboy • 1955-Disneyland opens for business in California • 1957-Tomorrowland opens in Disneyland • 1959-Family Circus comic first appears
TOYS, TOYS, TOYS! • 1949- Silly Putty was invented • 1950-Lego was invented • 1954-Matchbox cars invented • 1957-Hula Hoops invented • 1959-Barbie was invented and took over • 1960-Etch-a-sketch was invented • 1961-Ken was invented & him and Barbie fell in love
Barbie and Ken • She bought 3, gave one to her daughter then took the others to Mattel toy company. • Handler re-worked the look and gave the doll the name Barbie, after her daughter, Barbara. • Ken was introduced in 1961 as Barbie’s fictional boyfriend. • They met on the set of a TV commercial in 1961. First appeared in March 1959 Full name- Barbara Millicent Roberts Ruth Handler watched her daughter, Barbara play with paper dolls and she liked to give them adult roles. Her Husband, Elliot, co-founder of Mattel toy company wasn’t very impressed with her idea. When in Germany with her two kids, she came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. Inventions! • 1950-Papermate made first leak-free ballpoint pen; first copy machine; first credit card-Ralph Schneider • 1951-UNIVAC1- First commercial; A.E.C. produces electricity from atomic energy; Power steering • 1953-Chevy Corvette, first car to have all fiber-glass body; TV color broadcasting; Ray Kroc started McDonalds • 1954-Bell Telephone labs produced solar battery; Polypropylene was invented • 1955-Jonas Silk invented a polio vaccine • 1956-Solar powered wrist watch was invented; Chris Cockerell invented the hovercraft • 1957-184 lb. satellite was launched by the Russians; Sputnik 1
McDonalds • Original restaurant in San Bernardino. • Hamburgers were only 15 cents! • The McDonalds begin to franchise their restaurant • Second Mickey D’s opens in Phoenix, Arizona; First to feature the Golden Arcs. • Fourth restaurant opens in Downey, California; it’s the oldest McDonalds restaurant still operating. • McDonalds worldwide sells its 100th million hamburger • The 100th McDonalds opens in Fond du lac, Wisconsin.
