  2. Bigger and Better: The Growth of Suburbs • Two Main Reasons for Suburban Growth • More people had more money • Transportation was made easier

  3. More People With More Money $ • After WWII, the country went through an economic boom. This placed the majority of the people in the middle class. • Due to the increase in population, the government made it easier to buy or build a house in the suburbs so they did not to have to go through the pricey process of updating buildings in the cites.

  4. The Ease of Transportation A Family Car Due to Henry Ford’s ability to mass produce automobiles the average family was able to purchase a family car With increased fears of the Cold War, President Eisenhower created a system of interstate highways in order to move people and supplies quickly around the country. Both of these factors made it easier to commute from a suburb to a city for work everyday, essentially creating a “bedroom community”

  5. Why the Suburbs • “White Flight” • After WWII, many African Americans began establishing homes in urban areas. • Many of the urban areas’ wealthy whites moved from the cities to the outlying suburbs in order to keep the segregated feeling of the past. • “Greener and Cleaner” • Suburbs offered a healthier living environment away from the pollution from city factories

  6. Life Styles of the Suburbs • The idea of a “nuclear family” was viewed as normal. • The father would work outside the home while the mother would stay at home, cooking, cleaning, and raising the children. • The idea of “father knows best” was established. This meant that the head male figure of the household was in charge of practically everything. • Levittown • Mass-produced housing community built by the Levitt Company

  7. Levittown • Levittown, NY • First Levittown • Built on 4,000 acres of potato fields in Long Island • Consisted on 17,400 mass-produced homes • Up to 30 homes could built in a day • Levittown, PA • Second Levittown • Built in Bucks County, PA • Consisted on 10 different neighborhoods containing a total of 12,000 homes Click the picture above to view more information about Levittown and click the picture below to watch a video !

  8. Leaving an Impact • Greater Feeling of “Freedom” • Having a house in the suburbs gave American families financial freedom and freedom from depending on someone for a home. • Television • In many movies and television shows, such as the Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy, were representative of the suburban life style, where everyone would get married, buy a house and car, and have children.

  9. Review Questions • Review with Quizlet! • Review with a typed sheet in word!
