4. Industrialism • Nations’ factories created new weapons—wanted to “show them off” • Weapons inc: • --tanks • --submarines • --hand grenades • --rapid fire weapons • --poison (mustard gas) • New technology of IR meant that warfare was more horrific & deadly than ever before
5. Alliance System (Entangled Alliances) • Alliances are formal treaties—must be honored • Nations agreed to support each other if they went to war • Euro 1914– many nations were“entangled” in alliances (Ger, A-H & It) (GB, Fr and Rus)
