CASM-Africa Current Structure • Chair: Linus Adie (Nigeria) • West Africa – Toni Aubynn (Ghana) • Central Africa – Pierre Umbe (DRC) • East Africa – Kateme Tadesse (Tanzania) • Southern Africa - Salvador Mondlane (Mozambique) • North Africa – Keita Seydou (Mali) • Ad hoc support – Kevin DSouza, Veronika Kohler, Gotthard Walser, Karen Hayes, Wilson Mutagwaba, Delphin Tshimena, Antonio Pedro and others

Past activities (2) • Events • Participated in the “Donor coordinating workshop in the Kinshasa, DRC” – August 2007 • Participated in LSM-ASM workshop in Katanga – November 2007 • Participated CASM Annual Conference in Mongolia – September 2007 • Attended CASM SMAG in China – September 2007 • Women in Mining presentation to the AMP

  6. Past activities (3) • Partnerships • African Mining Partnership (AMP) – CASM Africa was requested to partner with the AMP in implementing ASM projects in Africa. CASM-Africa Chairperson gave a report to the AMP mid-term review in Ghana, August 2008. • Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) – Contributed to the initial planning CFC’s ASM workshop to be held in Zanzibar in November 2008 • ICMM link through their Chair of ASM-Working Group, Toni Aubynn

  7. Secretariat activities (4) • Partnerships • CSMI – Women in Mining Colloquium at the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, November 2008. Supported by the World Bank (through Adriana Eftimie) and the IFC (through Natalie Africa). A report on this was presented to the AMP in January 2008.

CASM-Africa Annual Learning Event ‘08 • Theme:- “Recognising the Role of ASM in Community Development in Africa”. • Legislation and regulatory policy frameworks • Improvement in the relationship between ASM-LSM • Technology development for the ASM sector • Development of fair trade in the ASM sector • The role of ASM women • Safety, health and environmental considerations • Approach and steps taken for eradication of child labor in ASM • Capacity building and transfer of skills • Rio Tinto sponsored the venue, catering and conference packs.

CASM-Africa Annual Learning Event ‘08 • CASM-Africa Chair (Mr Linus Adie) • Key Note Address: ASM in Africa - Kevin DSouza (Wardell-Armstrong) • Improvement in the relationship between ASM-LSM - Tony Aubynn (Gold Fields) and ASM from Ghana • Legislative and regulatory policy frameworks - Dr Wilson Mutagwaba and ASM from Tanzania • Technology development for the ASM sector - Nirdesh Singh (Mintek) and ASM from South Africa • The role of women in ASM - Mary Ankomah (Golden Star) • Development of fair trade in the ASM sector -  Dr Salvador Mondlane (Eduardo Mondlane University) • Approach and steps taken for eradication of child labor in ASM - Karen Hayes • Capacity building and the transfer of skills in the ASM sector - Ketema Tadesse (SEAMIC) and ASM from Tanzania • Discussion panel – included Gotthard Walser, John Hobbs, Antonio Pedro, Hudson Mtegha
