  1. The IACVB Policy Statement Regarding Environmentally Responsible Tourism The IACVB supports and encourages the efforts of its individual members to promote environmental responsibility in areas affected by tourism promotion and activity in their communities.

  2. Sample ProgramsNature Based Tourism Programs • The Melbourne Convention and Marketing Bureau, Melbourne, Australia was involved in establishing a heritage trail for interpreting and preserving the built environment.

  3. Nature Based Tourism Programs (Cont.) • The McAllen Convention and Visitors Bureau, McAllen, Texas, USA, hosts an annual nature festival that puts the spotlight on nature tourism activities. It gives local nature and environmental organizations a venue for reaching the public with their message.

  4. Community Development • The Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sarasota, Florida, devotes 56% of their bed tax to beach re-nourishment and recreation. The hotels actively participate in sea turtle nesting awareness on the beaches and the local “Lights Out forTurtles,” program.

  5. Community Awareness • The Jacksonville & the Beaches CVB, Jacksonville, Florida takes a key group of governmental and business leaders on an eco-tourism outing each year. Members of the press are invited, and regularly cover it. The annual activity helps community leaders appreciate the natural resources, understand the appeal of those resources related to tourism promotion, and helps the CVB build support within those organizations. The press coverage helps create general community awareness.

  6. Meetings and Conventions • The Northern Kentucky; Durham, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; and Denver Metro CVB’s all partner with food reclaiming organizations within their communities, and work with hotels, convention centers and meeting planners to facilitate the collection and distribution of leftover foods.

  7. Individual Consumer Programs • The Brownsville CVB, Brownsville, Texas, was the lead organization in developing the first Texas Audubon International Bird Festival. The four day event consisted of field tours, seminars and related functions to showcase the lesser known summer birding resource in South Texas.
