The New Right • Right wing grass-roots groups across the country emerged to support and promote single issues that reflected their key interest. • They created the conservative coalition- an alliance of business leaders, middle-class voters, disaffected democrats and fundamentalist Christian groups.

  4. II. Reaganomics • President Reagan introduced a sweeping package of new economic policies called Reaganomics. (1) budget cuts (2) tax cuts (3) increased defense spending Also known as supply-side or Trickle down economics.

  5. B) Many of the spending cuts came from Great Society programs that were designed to help the poor. C) President Reagan ignored many social problems at home such as the outbreak of AIDS.

  7. D)Because of Reagan's low popularity ratings from the budget cuts the Democrats felt they could beat him in 1984. E) The Democrats nominated Walter Mondale, who chose Geraldine Ferraro as VP, the first female VP candidate from a major party. F) Despite this, Reagan won reelection in 1984

Foreign Policy • Reagan spent massive amounts of money building up the military. • He felt the only way to prevent an attack from the Soviet Union was to make them fearful of a retaliatory attack. • Many Americans protested against the massive nuclear arms build up. • Reagan proposed Star Wars, (SDI) A spaced-based system to protect from nuclear attacks

  11. IV. Iran Contra B) Reagan’s Administration illegally sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of hostages. • The money was then used to secretly fund anti-communist guerrillas in Nicaragua. • Reagan claimed that he didn’t know anything about it.
