  2. Looking for a teaching/learning aid for mathematics content standards? Something that allows teachers to easily prepare challenging problem solving exercises to help prepare students for standardized mathematics exams and also provide an interactive facility for students to reinforce learned concepts. Left Click to Continue

  3. WISL has the answer !! Melanie’s Mathematics Content Standards (MCS) consists of three interactive facilities. A Teaching Aid that helps with preparation of problem solving exercises. A Learning Aid that allows students to practice solving generated problems in an interactive environment. Separate facilities are available for each grade level. Lastly an administrative tool provides for setting of parameters for the Teaching and Learning Aid facilities, maintenance of a valid class/ User ID data base and generation of various student performance reports and other exports. 5. Waterloo Information Systems Limited presents Melanie’s Mathematics Content Standards Learning Aid Tutorial The Learning Aid Tutorial describes the interactive facility that allows students to practice solving generated problems in an interactive environment. Left Click to Continue

  6. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The first order of business is to login. This identifies the user for performance monitoring and subsequent reporting. If the user is in multiple classes then the desired class must also be chosen. Left Click to Continue

  7. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial To initiate generation of a problem a Question Type is selected. If “Surprise Me!” is selected the program randomly generates a question. Upon clicking on a category a list of sub-categories is presented. A question is then randomly generated from the sub-category chosen. Left Click to Continue

  8. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The question is displayed and the student may attempt to determine the answer or use other aids. Left Click to Continue

  9. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial In this example the student determines an answer, places it in the answer box and clicks the submit answer button. Left Click to Continue

  10. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial Upon submission of an incorrect answer, a message is displayed and the box must be “x”ed to continue. Meanwhile the answer clock continues. Left Click to Continue

  11. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial Upon additional determination, the correct answer is submitted and an appropriate message is displayed. Left Click to Continue

  12. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial Some questions in categories such as “Measurement and Geometry” and “Statistics, Data Analysis and Probability” require graphical illustrations to fully describe the problem. Upon generation of the question a graphical illustration is displayed in the box in the bottom left corner. Left Click to Continue

  13. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The illustration may be enlarged by moving the cursor over the display area. In this example there are no additional clues available so the magnifying glass icons are greyed out and the multiple choice box is displayed automatically without penalty. Left Click to Continue

  14. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial Upon selection of the correct answer an appropriate message is displayed in the same manner as numeric questions. Left Click to Continue

  15. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The student can invoke the multiple choice option by clicking the multiple choice icon. A message is presented, warning that a time penalty will be assessed to use this aid. This is in the form of time subtracted from the total time allotted to complete the question. If the student agrees he clicks the “yes” radio button to continue, otherwise the “no” radio button is selected to continue. Meanwhile the answer clock continues. Left Click to Continue

  16. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The multiple choice box is presented and the student selects the radio button beside the answer of choice. Left Click to Continue

  17. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The student may also access clues by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. A penalty message is presented in the same manner as with the multiple choice option. This process would be repeated if a second clue were desired. Left Click to Continue

  18. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial The student may continue to submit multiple choice answers until the correct answer is submitted. Of course a time penalty is assessed for each incorrect answer. All penalty times are determined by the teacher by setting parameters for each class. Left Click to Continue

  19. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial Upon clicking on the red Toolbox a page is displayed with a menu that provides access to pages with information about single digit attributes, arithmetic matrices, unit conversions, an introduction from Melanie and a link to information about Melanie’s books. Left Click to Continue

  20. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial The single digit attributes are listed by digit and by attribute. Left Click to Continue

  21. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial Clicking on Arithmetic Matrices presents a list of the four basic arithmetic actions. Left Click to Continue

  22. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial Clicking on Division Matrix presents a matrix that allows the student determine the division relationship between any two single digit numbers. By clicking on the box that is at the intersection of the two desired numbers, the devisor on the left side (y axis) and the dividend on the top (x axis) the answer is displayed in the box with the two components of the answer along with decimal and fraction representations displayed above the matrix. Left Click to Continue

  23. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial Clicking on Multiplication Matrix presents a matrix that allows the student determine the multiplication relationship between any two single digit numbers. By clicking on the box that is at the intersection of the two desired numbers the answer is displayed in the box. Left Click to Continue

  24. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial Clicking on Subtraction Matrix presents a matrix that allows the student determine the subtraction relationship between any two single digit numbers. By clicking on the box that is at the intersection of the two desired numbers, the minuend on the left side (y axis) and the subtrahend on the top (x axis) the answer is displayed in the box along with the minus sign if applicable. Left Click to Continue

  25. MMN Learning Aid Tutorial Clicking on Addition Matrix presents a matrix that allows the student determine the addition relationship between any two single digit numbers. By clicking on the box that is at the intersection of the two desired numbers the answer is displayed in the box. Left Click to Continue

  26. MCS Learning Aid Tutorial Clicking on Conversion presents a list of conversion attributes. Clicking on the desired attribute presents a list of unit conversions, within or between measurement systems (the example displays the Length conversions). Left Click to Continue
