HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol • Protocol is just a request to send information • HTTP is the most common • HTTPS – the s means a secure site • Sub-domain • Sometimes required • Not always www; not all sites part of the web • www stands for world wide web • Domain name • The owner of the address • Name of the web server
Domains • Top level domain – what kind of website is it • .com – commercial (business for profit) • .org – organization (most often non-profit) • .edu – educational site • .gov – government site • .mil – military site • .net -- network • File names are just pages on that website; not necessary to reach the website
What the computer sees • Computers don’t understand text • They transfer Internet into numbers. • Computers have an address called an IP Address, just like phones have phone numbers • 23.23.154.295
