Today’s Checklist • Student progress record • Run-on sentences • Words of Wisdom • Our School Community • Stereotypes • Why are they damaging? • Work on Chapter 2 Questions for SYG • Reminder • Who are you going to interview?
Run-On Sentences If we did not use proper punctuation we would always have run-on sentences which would cause us to be out of breath and so we need to use punctuation appropriately in order to be clear about what we are saying and so that we do not bore our audience or gasp for breath as we are speaking which even though it would be hilarious for others sometimes would not be fun in the grand scheme of things…!
Student Progress Record • Record your marks for your test and your paragraph on your student progress record • Record your goal for the next unit • Record your learning skills evaluation on the backside
Words of Wisdom • View your words of wisdom collages • Listen to a segment of Randy Pausch’s last lecture, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” • Note three lessons that he shares with his audience
Our School Community • What advice would you give to a new member of our school community? • Complete and compare your advice with a partner! • Do you have anything in common to share?
Stand Your Ground – Chapter Two • Work on the comprehension questions for Chapter Two • If finished, begin reading Chapter Three and complete questions
Stereotypes • People often use labels or categories to describe others • These can be based on such characteristics as clothing, looks, and the way a person talks • Categorizing things or people is a natural human inclination • BUT people often make assumptions about groups of people they don't even know
Example: • What are some stereotypes that Canadians tend to hold about Americans? • Vice versa? • Rick Mercer talking to Americans
Common Stereotypes • How many stereotypes do you see? • What are five common stereotypes that are used among adolescents? • Circulate to each posted stereotype and write down adjectives associated with each • You must add one adjective each stereotype • You may not repeat adjectives already written by others
Have a Look • Do assumptions apply to everyone in a group? • Do most people hold the same assumptions about a group? Why or why not? • Do assumptions tell us anything definite about a categorized individual? • How do assumptions affect your behavior toward others?
Why these exist • When we make assumptions about an entire group of people, those assumptions are referred to as stereotypes • When assumptions and stereotypes influence our attitudes, we may find that making a fair judgement about someone or something is difficult. • This influence on judgement is called a "bias." • Cafeteria from Mean Girls
