Interesting facts about Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) and GAIN/CalWORKs * LATTC is located in the heart of the downtown Figueroa corridor serving the lowest economic community in California and the U.S. * LATTC offers the widest array of career technical/vocational educational programs (over 80 skills, certificate and degree programs) of the 112 community colleges. * LATTC GAIN/CalWORKs serves the largest number of vocational participants in the Los Community College District * LATTC GAIN/CalWORKs receives in excess of 120 County DPSS/GAIN Vocational monthly referrals * LATTC provides monthly GAIN Vocational Orientations * LATTC provides bi-monthly Self-Initiated Program Participant (SIPP) Orientations * LATTC provides an annual GAIN graduation for short-term training completion

  3. Vision for Men of Calworks In 2005, CalWORKs began to see an increase in the number of male referrals, in particular single fathers. As the years passed, the program began to serve more two parent households and male custodial parents. The rise of single fathers became more evident. The program director had a vision to provide additional support services to our male population. “Men of CalWORKs” was birthed and piloted in fall 2007. This became possible when a male counselor was hired to offer these services expressly for our men. The vision included monthly meetings to discuss various topics and provide special guests essential to the completion of their training program and gainful employment. Incentives are also provided during the meeting (flash drives, copy cards, tee-shirts, motivational books, and other items).

  9. Planning for monthly meetings Director and Counselor collaborate on male student support needs and calendar monthly meetings six times per academic year. Monthly meetings take place in September, October, November, February, March and April. If monthly topic is relevant to outside campus community, general student body is invited to meeting. Meetings are planned in advance to reduce schedule conflicts with other CalWORKs campus activities.

Formulate Student Learning Outcomes Survey students to demonstrate validity Track student success (course & certificate completion/ employment attainment) Seek to replicate model at other California Community College CalWORKs programs Expand network of on and off campus resources to support our male students with personal and academic/vocational training needs

  11. What does it take to start a Men of Calworks Group? • Designate a male staff or faculty member to meet with your male students once a month (1.5 hours) for six months during academic year • Set aside funds for meeting incentives • Reserve classroom space for monthly meetings

  12. Portraits of Success • Rodney Robinson, Community Planning Economic Development student, was elected as student trustee for LA Community College District Board of Trustees. He was requested to continue in this role for an additional year. Mr. Robinson also ran for the California State Assembly, 59th District and finished a close second out of a field of five candidates. • Roosevelt Johnson, an extraordinary culinary student, was selected by his peers to represent LA Trade Technical College’s graduating class as commencement speaker for the 2012 graduation ceremony. • Ramon Salinas, experienced Process Technology Student hired with Baxter Technologies .
