A Balanced Literacy Program Working With Words Writing Guided Reading Independent Reading
Working with Words Phonics/Spelling Patterns-Making Words High Frequency Words Frequently Misspelled Words from student’s writing.
Spelling • Spelling Lists start the second nine-weeks. • Monday Pre-Test * Students that miss none will receive the challenge list. • Friday Test • Spelling City – www.spellingcity.com “… spelling in the home should extend beyond those frustrating Thursday night efforts to force children to memorize a list of words for the test on Friday. Independent Reading Readers Workshop • Students learn strategies to help develop their reading skills. • Students read Self-Selected Text. • Students respond to their reading.

Writing Writer’s Workshop: Students write on self selected topics at an individual pace. Snack and Birthday Treats • You can send a healthy snack with your child daily. State law prohibits us from providing food. • Please NO Soda products for lunch or snack. • Store purchased birthday treats only. • Please have them in the office by 2:00. We will celebrate birthdays at the end of the day. • Napkins would be appreciated.

Homework *Homework will go home the first school day of the month. It should be returned the last school day of the month. *Homework will consist of: Word Work Math Science or Social Studies Writing *It is an expectation that First graders read every night for 20 minutes to help reinforce strategies taught in the classroom. http://teachersites.schoolworld.com/webpages/1_Sparks/hmwk.cfm

Sparks Attendance and Tardy Policy *When sickness or other obligations necessitates an absence, a note signed by the parent/guardian explaining the reason for the absence is required the day the student returns to school. If a note is not submitted the absence will be considered unexcused and the student will be allowed three days to submit a written note. Absences such as vacations or trips (except those approved in advance by the principal according to Board policy) will be considered unexcused. *This year, unexcused leave earlys, will count as a tardy and will show up on report cards. If they leave early for a dr. appt and bring a dr. note, it will not be counted against them.

Rainy Day Dismissal On bad weather days, all students will be considered a car rider.
