Recuerda… • The letter “C” has two sounds in Spanish: “S” & “K” (Comida, Cerrado) • The “C” is a soft sound when combined with the “i“ and the “e” • To maintain the “K” sound, we must change their spelling: • Ca • Ce -> Que • Ci -> Qui • Co • Cu • Páginadoscientostreinta y ocho

HACER en el pretérito • There is a group of verbs that have an irregular stem in the preterite. • One such verb is HACER • Its stem becomes HIC in the preterite. • These irregular verbs also have a different pattern in the preterite:
Preterite of HACER (to do) • hice • hiciste • hizo hicimos hicisteis hicieron Please note that in order to keep the “s” sound in 3rd person singular, HIC must change to HIZ because “CO” sounds like “KO”
Hacer, Querer & Venir have an “i” in the stem… (hic-quis-vin)

Decir & Traer end in a “j” There is no “i” in 3rd person plural ending for the “j” words!
¿Cómo se dice? • The players said good things about their coach. • Los jugadoresdijeronbuenascosas de suentrenador. • They brought their lunch to school. • Trajeronsualmuerzo a la escuela.
Haber • In the present tense, we use HAY (there is/are) • Hay 15 chicas en la clase. • There are 15 girls in the class. • Hay una profesora. • There is one teacher. • In preterit, we use HUBO (There were/was). • Hubo 16 chicas en la clase, pero ahora hay 13. • There were 16 girls in class, but now there are 13.

Some verb meanings change in the preterit… • Conocer: To know (someone, place) • Conocí* means to meet someone (beginning of knowing) • Poder: to be able to (have the ability) • Pude means you were able to do something. • Pude comer la pizza entera. • No poder: to not be able to (w/o trying) • No pude* means you failed after trying. • (no) querer: to (not) want • “No quise” means you refused to do something at a specific time. • No quise comer anoche) • Saber: to know • Supe means you found something out or learned (about) it. • Anoche supe que el equipo americano ganó.
