EMU Installation/Commissioning March V31 version
Shipping Containers • stacks of 5 boxes (easily re-stackable) • chambers are assembled and tested with electronics: • once cover is taken off, one can connect and readout all electronics without extracting a chamber • HV and Gas connectors accessible without opening boxes: • test for gas leaks • test for broken wires and HV disconnections in air • test dark current at nominal HV and nominal gas mixture
CSCs will arrive to ISR Gas pipes?
Handling on Arrival Semi-clean rooms? 1) Truck enters here 2) Unloading Stacks of 5 CSCs 3) Stacks are moved to the tunnel
ISR: storage hall 4)HV and Leak Test in boxes 4*) Broken CSCs go to semi- clean room for repair • 5) Pre-installation Test: • dark current test (nominal mix) • un-stack, spread, and open • use portable mini-FAST DAQ: • LVDB mezzanine board • ALCT self-test • CFEB connectivity • CFEB noise • CFEB calibration • AFEB connectivity • AFEB noise • ALCT/CLCT Self-trigger • Glue alignment pads (?) • close and stack again • gas: Ar+CO2 Notes: Italic--we may want to skip later ME1--may require pre-installation tests conducted twice (on arrival and before installation)
SX5: installation/commissioning:tentative sequence under scrutiny • ME2 (example): 36+18=54 CSCs • deliver to SX5 30 chambers (6 stacks) = (5 days) • (gas leak in FY02-03 when we have time) = (6 days) • burst of installation of “back” chambers @ 4 CSC/day = 7 days XY • check for gas leak, in parallel with • burst of cabling/piping for back chambers @ 4 CSC/day = 7 days Y • commission “back” CSCs @ 4 CSC/day (portable HV and DAQ) = 7 days Y • at the same time deliver to SX5 another 30 chambers = (5 days) • burst of installation of “front” chambers @ 4 CSC/day = 7 days XY • check for gas leak, in parallel with • burst of cabling/piping for “front” chambers @ 4 CSC/day = 7 days Y • commission gas/water for the station = 1 day Y • commission “front” CSCs @ 4 CSC/day (portable HV and DAQ) = 7 days Y • alignment photogrametry = 2 days Y ------------- = 45 days • after that maintain Ar+CO2 gas flow, monitor gas leaks, test HV periodically X - need for crane, Y - need for cherry picker
Commissioning Tests to be based on FAST site DAQ MINIMAL COMMISSIONING TESTS are in BOLD 1 Assembly 2 Water leak 3 LV electronics turn-on 4 HV turn on (current and cabling) 5 ALCT self-test 6 AFEB Noise test 7 AFEB Connectivity & Alive 8 AFEB Threshold and Analog Noise 9 AFEB Time Delay 10 CFEB Noise 11 CFEB Connectivity and Alive 12 CFEB Calibration 13 Comparator Noise 14 Comparator Threshold 15 Left/Right Comparator Logic 16 Left/Right Comparator Offset 17 Neighbor Comparator Offset 18 Comparator Timing 19 Chamber gain map 20 ALCT self-trigger on cosmics (need gas+HV) 21 CLCT self-trigger on cosmics (need gas+HV) 22 High-statistics cosmics (strip analysis) 23 Performance vs HV 24 High-rate test
Commissioning Manpower • Overall Coordination: 1 FTE (senior) • DAQ Expert: 1 DAQ software expert • ISR: 1 expert, 2 techs • Receiving, quick check on arrival • Pre-installation tests • Repairs, replacement of boards • SX5: 2 experts, 2 techs • Signal cable dressing/tests (on disks) • Service cables (HV, LV, slow control), pipes, hoses… • Post-installation commissioning
Summary: 2001-2002 • 2001: • next 6 mo: start forming a core of CERN-residing physicists define all steps and procedures both at ISR and SX5 • 2002: • January: First 10 CSCs will arrive to CERN-ISR • January: Portable DAQ and Equipment at CERN-ISR Test environment (gas, outlets, Ethernet, etc.) Working place (desks, phones, cabinets, etc.) CSC test and repair tooling, clean room • Jun-Aug: Pre-installation tests of 36 ME23/2 and 18 ME2/1 • June: One more portable DAQ and Equipment at SX5 Test and work environment • August: Finish YE-2 infrastructure • Sep-Dec: Installation/commissioning of ME-2
