History • Youtube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees of PayPal. • Hurley and Chen came up with the idea for YouTube early 2005. • Began as a venture-funded technology startup, primarily from a $11.5 million investment by Sequoia Capital. • Headquarters were located above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. • The first video to be put on the site was Me at the zoo, uploaded on April 23, 2005. • Roughly 60 hours of videos are uploaded every minute. • In 2006 YouTube was sued by a company who used a similar site domain. YouTube won and the company changed their website name. • Headquarters is now in San Bruno, California.
How does is It work? • Uses advertising – Google AdSense • Google AdSense allows publishers in the Google network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, and rich media adverts. • These adverts can generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis. • Advertisements will play for 30 seconds or so before you can view a video. • To avoid the message, an option is available that after 7 seconds you can skip the rest. • Another thing you can do to skip the ad is open another tab on your computer and just wait for it to be over before you go back.
How it’s used • Companies use YouTube to promote their products. • For example…
Description • YouTube allows registered users to upload their videos free of charge, comment on other people’s videos, and if you are over 18 you can view videos considered to have offensive content. • Registered and non-registered users can view videos that are available on the site. • CBS, the BBC, Vevo, Hulu, and other media corporations upload their content as well. • You can view music videos, movies, shows, video blogs, short original videos, and educational videos
Payment • This is a free site available to the public, so you don’t pay anything. • Stays current by having the option for anyone to upload videos.
