  2. Motorways in the Republic of Ireland • The responsibilities of driver on the road. • In Ireland, the highest category of road is a motorway (mótarbhealach, plural: mótarbhealaí), indicated by the prefix M followed by one, two or three digits.

  3. MotorwayMethods • Traffic joins and leaves motorways by means of slip roads. On joining, the driver has to watch the traffic in the nearside lane of the motorway, indicate right well in advance, match their car’s speed with motorway traffic and move smoothly into a gap. • Leaving the motorway requires a high degree of driver concentration and care. Even before starting a motorway journey you should know what exit you’re going to use. They are identified by numbers on all good road maps and atlases, so have that number in mind when you begin your trip.
