Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) • . . . What ? • . . . Who ? • . . . Where ? • . . . Why ? • . . . When ? • . . . How ?
What . . . • Visible, near-R and mid-IR ELT • Seven 8.4m mirrors • Adaptive, segmented secondary • Multiple AO modes • Equivalent aperture : 21.5m • Pupil Diameter : 25.3m • Field of view : 20 - 30 arcmin
Who . . . • Carnegie Institution of Washington • Harvard University • Massachusetts Institute of Technology • Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory • Texas A&M University • The Australian National University • The University of Texas at Austin • University of Arizona • University of Michigan • + most recently, the US National Science Foundation
Where . . . • Testing several sites on Las Campanas in Northern Chile • Excellent seeing (< 0.6” at 50th %) • Southern Hemisphere • Much of infrastructure in place • Site statistics for over 30 years • Suitable for mid-IR 20% of time (?)
Why . . . • Science : Wide-field, Multiple AO modes, excellent PSF • Location : Synergy with SKA, ALMA, Gemini; site available • Partners : Strong technical & academic collaborations • Long term Future : 2015 - 2045 (our students students) • Influence : Equal partnership & in early enough to matter • Risk Mitigation : CoDR, 1st mirror cast, prototypes • Industrial advantages : AU GMT industrial consortium • Share per Cost : Matched to 10%+ Australian ambition
