Community College, Cal State University, University of California and Private Institutions The system of higher education in California is comprised of the following: Community Colleges - 113 Community colleges are two-year public institutions. Their main mission is to provide transfer opportunities towards 4 year degrees by allowing students to take their general education requirements, to provide students with the opportunity to gain a 2 year associates degree, and to provide career education, training and/or certificate. California State University (CSU) - 23 Cal States are four-year institutions and bridge the missions of the community colleges and of the universities. Cal states offer majors and courses that are applied (for example business management or graphic design) as well as academic (for example history, physics, English, or psychology). University of California (UC) - 9 The UC's are the research wing of the California educational system. Their mission is to provide state-of-the-art discipline research in their fields, with teaching as a concurrent goal. All the majors at the UC’s are academic and research based.
