  1. Project GovernanceProposed Changes Alberto Di Meglio (CERN) Project Director 1st EMI Periodic Review Brussels, 22 June 2011

  2. Assessment • Streamline the technical management process by simplifying relationship between PTB and JRA1 • Strengthen the project focus on sustainability, exploitation, long-term open standardization, interoperability, etc. • Clarify the role and relationships of QC teams in SA1 and JRA1 1st EMI Periodic Review

  3. 1) PTB and JRA1 • Overlap of responsibilities between PTB and JRA1 • PTB members are also JRA1 task leaders, duplication of duties • The largest part of technical work in EMI is in JRA1 1st EMI Periodic Review

  4. 2) Sustainability and long-term strategies • Currently scattered across NA1, NA2 and JRA1, difficult to create a coherent vision • Long-term activities mixed with short-term tasks, especially in JRA1, difficult to focus • No single EMI representative to strategy meetings with other projects and communities or standardization bodies (PD, TD, NA2 leader, JRA1 leader) 1st EMI Periodic Review

  5. 3) Quality Control • Two separate teams in SA1 and JRA1, duplication and overlap of activities • Cross-WP relationship with SA2 Quality Assurance team, difficult to provide and get feedback as part of the day-to-day activities 1st EMI Periodic Review

  6. Merge TD and JRA1 Leader Project Director Technical Director Technical Director (75%) JRA1 Leader (25%) Direct coordination of technical resources No overlapping report lines Only the four Technical Area tasks are part of JRA1 JRA1 - Development, Integration and Evolution 1st EMI Periodic Review

  7. NA3 and Strategic Director Project Director Strategy Director Strategy Director (25%) NA3 Leader (75%) • Consolidation of long-term activities in a single WP with a single leader • Increased focus on sustainability and roadmap definition, interoperability with clouds and other infrastructures NA3- Sustainability, Standardization and Long-Term Strategies NA3.2 Sustainability(from NA2) NA3.3 Standardization(from JRA1) NA3.4 Interoperability(from JRA1) 1st EMI Periodic Review

  10. Single QC Team in SA2 SA1 SA1/QC SA2/QC SA2 JRA1/QC A single QC team avoids duplications of work and improves communication among QC experts The move into SA2 makes QC more “third-party” with respect to SA1 and JRA1 and improves the communication with the QA team JRA1 1st EMI Periodic Review

  11. Implementation • NA3 is staffed with effort coming from JUELICH, NIIF, UiO and UWAR • Partners having effort in the sustainability, interoperability and standardization tasks in NA2 and JRA1 • The whole of NA1 will be involved in the strategic activities alongside the Strategy Director (attendance to meetings, workshops, concertation events, etc) 1st EMI Periodic Review

  12. Implementation • Existing deliverables and milestones are moved with the corresponding tasks • The current JRA1 Standardization and Interoperability deliverables move to NA3 in the respective tasks • The Standardization and the Interoperability deliverables in NA3 cover the strategic aspects • The short-term development aspects of standardization, integration and interoperability remain in JRA1 and are described in the Area Technical Plans 1st EMI Periodic Review

  13. Budget • The plan is budget neutral for the project and for each individual partner • NA3 is a COORD WP as NA2 • SA1 and JRA1 have the same cost constraints as SA2 • Small effort adjustments to be done in JRA1 for LU and JUELICH 1st EMI Periodic Review

  14. Thank you EMI is partially funded by the European Commission under Grant Agreement INFSO-RI-261611 1st EMI Periodic Review
