Jugar – to play • This verb has a stem change. What does that mean? • The stem of the verb changes when you conjugate it. • In this case, the stem is: jug • The u in the stem becomes ue • In Spanish this is called a “stem changing verb”.
Stem changing verbs cont. • NOTE: The nosotros and vosotros forms do not stem change. • After you made the stem change, conjugate the verb with the regular endings.
Steps for conjugating “stem changing” verbs. • Decide if the verb has stem change and what it is. (Ex: Jugar – yes, bailar - no) • Write the stem with the stem change. (Jueg) • Look at the ending. Is it –ar, -er, -ir? (-ar verb) • Add the correct ending.
