Technology Planning Andrew Faulkner inc. some plagiarism from “Our Leader”
Technology is more than just ‘stuff’ Includes: Hardware - ‘stuff’ Algorithms Techniques Software Systems etc....
Our developments use..... Some very new technology – some not even available yet! – Projected for SKA build time Need to understand and control RISK
is RISK bad?? No!! like stress: Some is good (for now) But, too much isBAD
e.g wide-area comms data rate: 1Gb 10Gb100Gb ‘Goldilocks’Risk & friends:fallback + upgrade Tech. Innovation Better performance More/new science
Changes Project Phase Now Concept: High risk Development: Understand risk Build time: Minimised risk
e.g. Controlling Risk Risk Understanding: • Follow trends – commercial, industrial • Demonstrators → pathfinders → initial phase Risk Status assessment - ongoing • Empirical - educated guess • Formal - structured risk assessment → ‘Retiring’ Riskover time
Some ‘Formal Technical Readiness’ Questions..... • Has an identical unit been successful operationally in an identical configuration? • Has an identical unit been demonstrated on an operationally, but in a different configuration/system architecture? • Has an identical unit been mission qualified but not operationally demonstrated? • Has a prototype unit been demonstrated in the operational environment? • Has a prototype been demonstrated in a relevant environment or surrogate platform? • Has a breadboard unit been demonstrated in a relevant environment • Has a breadboard unit been demonstrated in a laboratory (controlled) environment? • Has analytical and experimental proof-of-concept been demonstrated? • Has a concept or application been formulated? • Have basic principles been observed and reported? • None of the above NASA etc.
A few SKADS Risk thoughts • EM simulation M • System noise – LNA, matching H →M • Beamforming – analogue & digital H • Volume manufacturing M • Signal transport L • Calibration H • Post processing H • RFI suppression M • Software - System control and processing M →H Need to start some retirements...
Workshop 2008...... • SKADS will be nearing completion ..... • Assess risk in our Tasks for final reports and future work, so: All Tasks will perform a Structured Risk Assessment
And finally..... ...new technology & risk is a delicate balance:
