Brielle Elementary School Special Education Monitoring Summary
Parent Interviews • Many parents expressed a level of satisfaction with the district’s programs, services and staff. • Parent concerns were expressed as follows: 1. Limitations of part-time Child Study Team. 2. Difficulties with communication and scheduling meetings. 3. Additional concerns regarding provision of programs, individualized decision –making and access to general education programs (Pre-School).

Areas of Need The district identified and corrected the provisions for written notice for ESERS prior to the on-site monitoring process. Other areas identified by the district: 1. Provision for related services. 2. Transfer procedures for Eligible for Speech and Language Services. 3. Referral process, identification meeting timelines, identification meeting participants. 4. Copies of evaluation reports 10 days prior to meeting. 5. IEP required considerations and components (ESLS). 6. Statements of transition service needs (high school).
On-site monitoring- The monitor found the following additional areas of need: 1. Vision and hearing screenings (Not consistently conducted for every Initial Evaluations). 2. Multi-disciplinary evaluations (Pre-school). 3. Re-evaluation when a change of eligibility considered (ESLS). 4. Student and agency invitation to meetings. 5. IEP graduation requirements.
Improvement Plan • Many of the areas of need have been addressed since the monitoring took place in November. The date completed will be documented in the plan. • The Improvement Plan is currently being revised to resubmit within forty-five (45) days to the Office of Special Education Programs as per the code.
