NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES • Career advancement and social/individual support for early career and non-tenure eligible faculty • Goals: increased retention and higher level of job satisfaction • Four areas of emphasis • Increased communication • Community building • Enhanced mentoring • Support for lecturers/clinicians/adjunct faculty
Increased communication • Faculty helpline: faculty@iastate.edu • Better coordination with programming by CELT, VP for Research and Economic Development, and Academic Colleges • Redesign of professional development website on SVPP site including calendars for specific cohorts of faculty (pre-tenure, new faculty, department chairs, lecturers/clinicians/adjunct • Redesigned New Faculty Orientation event in August • All events posted on ISU Calendar – Training and Development (with RSS and iCal subscriptions)
Community building • Socializing opportunities at New Faculty Orientation • Second-year reunion for new tenure-eligible and tenured faculty
Enhanced mentoring • Training workshops for new mentors • Spring programming for new faculty on: • Time and stress management • Mentoring graduate students • Getting the most out of mentoring • Balancing work and private life • Strategically plan for P&T • New faculty scholars program (Jan-Dec) for new tenure-eligible faculty with CELT and SVPP programs • Registration for events through AccessPlus
Enhanced mentoring (2) • Virtual mentoring through institutional subscription to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (www.facultydiversity.org) • Monday motivator • Teleconferences/webinars • Virtual learning communities • Forums
