  2. Aim • To gather an understanding of the public’s propensity to travel on the water as opposed to by more traditional methods such as buses or the private car

  3. Method • Sarah Collins - Exeter Geography undergraduate • Eight hours over two days travelling on the X53 Jurassic Coast bus • 92 surveys completed with passengers

  4. Key findings • Assuming a vessel which was appropriate for the sea conditions, would you be interested in travelling by boat? • Yes55% • Only in calm conditions 25% • No 20% • So, 80% of people would be interested in travelling by boat

  5. Most important considerations • Cost 55% • Convenience 52% • Whether it links to other public transport 43% • Reliability 42%

  6. Least important considerations • How long it takes 36% • How comfortable vessel is 32% • Predictability of service 13%

  7. What are the top three factors which might put you off? • Adverse weather 75% • If too expensive 65% • Inconvenience 53% • Other options included • sea sickness 38% • don’t like boats 15% • disability 7%

  8. Have you travelled much by boat before? • Yes, on holidays 43% • Only on large ferries 36% • No 20% • Yes, I sail 1%

  9. Do you feel ‘comfortable’ with the idea of travelling by sea? • Yes 74% • No 26%

  10. What have we learnt? • Definitely a keen interest in travelling by sea • Cost and convenience most important factors • Surprisingly, predictability not overly important (indicates an understanding of the constraints?) • The biggest barrier is adverse weather conditions • 74% felt comfortable with travelling by sea • Sarah said most people thought it was ‘a really good idea’

  11. What do we still need to find out? • Survey was undertaken on the bus – what about those people who don’t regularly travel by public transport? • Survey work at coastal car parks required?
