Napoleon Bonaparte Very very Distant relative of Napoleon Dynamite
Early life • Born on August 15, 1769 in Corsica, France (island in the Mediteranean) • General at age 26 • was a whopping 5’2” tall (strong personality) • Napoleon Complex???? • Married Josephine de Beauharnais- Leader in French society (bonus for Napoleon) • One of the best generals of all time
Rise of Napoleon • 1799- 1814 was known as the Napoleonic Era • Italy- French army was weak/ poorly equipped. • Napoleon improved conditions of troops (got support by boosting moral) • Napoleon got the Sardinians (people in Italy) to make peace • Austria 1797- Forces them to sign a treaty that gave France control of northern Italy • The Directory- new government after Robespierre got killed • (Afraid Napoleon would try and take over) • To keep him away from France, they sent him to fight the British in Egypt. • Got defeated (did not tell the truth about the loss…. Why?)
Napoleonic Era Begins • 1799- coup d’ etat gives him power (he becomes a dictator) • People accepted him as dictator (needed stability from all the chaos) • Controlled army, navy, appointing/dismissing officials
Accomplishments in Gov’t • Napoleon creates a new constitution. Lets the people vote • this is called plebiscite (people vote yes or no, could not • Make any suggestions) • Napoleonic Codes – laws created by Napoleon that were to be • followed in every French Territory that he controlled/conquered • Created a public education system: high schools, universities, technical schools • why would he do this?
Concordant- fixed relations with Catholic Church • Recognized most French citizens were Catholic, but still gave freedom of religion/ gave land back that was taken during French Rev. • By 1802, Napoleon was able to either make peace with Great Britain, Austria, and Russia or get them to desert each other
Oh no he didn’t • His supporters want his family to rule forever • plebiscite vote declares him Emperor (what was plebescite?) • 1804- the pope comes to crown the couple • Napoleon takes the crown from the pope’s hands and • puts it on himself • Why did Napoleon do this? • To show that the power of the empire rests with Napoleon, not the Pope
Growth of the Empire • Looking at the maps you duplicated for HW, how did Napoleon expand France’s empire? • Dominates Europe– • Used his military strength to force Austria and Prussia to sign peace treaties with him as he expanded east; Russia aligned with France • Abolishes the Holy Roman Empire • Unifies northern Italy under his control • Lets relatives rule over countries he conquers.
and Gets divorced • Why would a king/dictator want to get a divorce? • His wife could not give him a child. • Quote on divorce • Far from ever finding cause for complaint, I can to the contrary only congratulate myself on the devotion and tenderness of my beloved wife. She has adorned thirteen years of my life; the memory will always remain engraved on my heart. • March 11, 1810 Marries Marie Louise of Austria
Nationalism • Nationalism – love for your country • Conquered countries used the Napoleonic Code (for rid of feudalism, just like French Revolution) • Spread military techniques • Feelings of loyalty and patriotism for Napoleon and France spread among the people he conquered (Declaration of the Rights of Man made them happy) • This also made his enemies hate him more.
