Do I get a computer? • For the most part… • KCC has worked hard to not only procure an upgraded set of PCs for use in PhD student offices, but to keep the older machines available for our use • Most offices have one newer PC (HP), and it is KCC’s goal to keep an older Dell PC at the remaining occupied desks • These older PCs cannot be maintained by KCC and will not be replaced as they fail
PC and Office Etiquette • As first year students, most of you will be primarily using the PC for the Internet, literature research, and word processing • You may be surprised how much handwritten work you turn in during your first year! • Senior students have a greater need for the processing power of the newer PCs, and should be granted access whenever possible
Antivirus software (McAfee free for students) Windows updates, patches Firewall Most of all, BE SMART! Email: If you don’t know where it comes from, DON’T OPEN IT IGNORE AND CLOSE ALL POP-UPS! PC Security (Personal PCs)
Everyone at Purdue has a career account You should have received instructions to activate this, along with your email address, over the summer https://www.purdue.edu/apps/account/AccountSetup Look up in Purdue directory You can also update your info here Memorize it (along with your PUID!) Career Account
Passwords • Change your password at: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/security/password/ • When a service requires you to change your career account password, BE SMART! Follow the suggestions provided by ITAP: • Don’t use variations of the same password over and over • Keep your password PRIVATE!
